The 1% Club responds to cheating “conspiracy theories”

The 1% Club bosses have addressed cheating “conspiracy theories” surrounding the show.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV game show sees 100 contestants attempt to remember little-known facts, dates, and trivia in order to win £100,000 by answering a question that only 1% of the country could get right.

The show has attracted plenty of attention from viewers, with some accusing one of the players of cheating.

In a recent episode, contestants were asked: “To which body part can you add one letter at the start to make it the word for the job it does?” The answer was “ear” for “hear”.

Contestant Jason Duckett, who took on the challenge with his wife Rowena, was seen rubbing his ears during the episode, which some social media users took as a sign he was attempting to cheat the game.

Despite both Jason and Rowena having been eliminated from the competition at that point, it didn’t stop viewers from taking to social media to spread cheating allegations, forcing show bosses to address the situation.

A spokesperson for the programme told The Sun: “Any game show worth its salt attracts conspiracy theories. But happily, initial inquiries quickly established that there were no grounds for suspicion.”

Jason also spoke out following the uproar, praising the “creativity” of viewers. He told The Sun: “I almost admire the creativity of someone to come up with that because I hadn’t thought of that. There was nothing to gain for either of us.

“We were both out. Anything I was doing it was to just sort of calm myself. If you spin it, you could say my arms are folded. Was the answer harm and arm?”

It’s not the first time the show has garnered controversy, with viewers previously airing their confusion over an alleged mistake.

The question, which only 30% of the UK could answer, was: “Amrit and his grandad share the same birthday. Their birthday balloons arrive muddled up. Amrit’s grandad is three times older than him. How old is Amrit?”

An image beneath the question showed four balloons shaped in the numbers six, eight, seven and two, with the answer being revealed that Amrit is 26 years old, making his grandfather 78.

However, those tuning in soon accused the show of making an “error”, claiming that there were multiple correct answers to the question. Many pointed out that the six balloon could have been changed to a nine, making the answers 29 and 87.
