New Jason Bourne Film In Early Development At Universal Pictures – Report

Universal Pictures is reportedly in the early stages of developing a new installment in the Jason Bourne franchise, following the success of director Edward Berger’s World War I epic, All Quiet On The Western Front. The Oscar-winning director is said to be in negotiations to oversee development and direct the film, according to Deadline.

The studio, however, has not officially commented on the matter, and “insiders close to the project” say that there is no script at this time. The project is still in its early development phase, with Berger’s potential involvement leading to speculation that the Bourne series–which has laid dormant since 2016’s Jason Bourne movie and 2019’s Treadstone series–may be gearing up for more of a revival.

If the deal with Berger materializes, he would initially be the sole person attached to the project. There is currently no other talent on board, but sources suggest that Matt Damon, who played the iconic role of Bourne in four out of five films, would be the first choice to return once a script is finalized. Damon’s involvement hinges on the quality of the script and story, and no commitment is expected until those elements are in place. Damon has done exactly this in the past–in 2021, Damon walked away from “a bunch of money” for a Bourne videogame because he didn’t want it to be an FPS.

Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front received nine Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, including Best International Film. Berger’s track record also extends to TV productions, including The Terror and Patrick Melrose, which garnered Emmy and BAFTA nominations.
