McIntosh Launches C55 and C2800 Network Connected Preamplifiers

McIntosh Laboratory announced the launch of its latest preamplifiers with updated connected features, the return of the Processor Loop, allowing to insert an external signal processor and an update Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) with support for 24-bit/192kHz and DSD512 files. The C55 Solid State Preamplifier and the C2800 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier, are both Roon Tested and offer 16 inputs, including HDMI ARC and a USB input for DSD and DXD 384kHz support, and a dedicated subwoofer output.

The C55 Solid State Preamplifier is an attractive option for McIntosh aficionados, with a design that inherits the legacy of its multi award-winning predecessor, the C53, and elevates the home audio experience to new realms. With 16 inputs (9 analog and 7 digital), the C55 easily becomes the nerve center of a great stereo audio system. Analog inputs include 3 balanced and 4 unbalanced connections, along with 2 phono inputs configurable for either Moving Coil or Moving Magnet phono cartridges to connect turntables. Both phono inputs feature adjustable Gain in 6dB steps from 40dB to 64dB as well as RIAA equalization.

The digital section is housed in the DA2 Digital Audio Module and is powered by an audiophile-grade Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC). The DA2 offers an array of connections, including an audio-only HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) input that converts Dolby and DTS multichannel audio formats to two-channel audio.

The preamplifier design includes electromagnetic input switching for reliable, noiseless, and distortion-free switching of the audio sources, with level trim adjustment for matching analog input levels to prevent abrupt changes in volume levels. A precision balanced, digitally controlled attenuator system enables accurate volume control with 0.1dB accuracy. The fully regulated power supplies and a special R-core power transformer also ensure stable, noise-free operation, while the eco-friendly Power Management System will turn the unit off after 30 minutes of inactivity (can be disabled).

In addition to using the included remote control or the front panel controls, the C55 can be connected to the home network which unlocks control options offered through the complimentary Connect app (scheduled to be available April 2024). Designed for both Android and Apple devices, the Connect app can be used to control key functions of the C55 including Volume control as well as Input and Output selection. Select McIntosh source components that have a data cable connected to the C55 will be partially controllable via the app’s Source Control feature. Another benefit of adding the C55 to a network is the ability to receive periodic firmware updates, adding new features and performance updates.

The McIntosh C55 Solid State Preamplifier also features a 8-band analog equalizer that can be bypassed if desired. And users will no enjoy the return of the Processor Loop, something not available on the last few generations of McIntosh preamplifiers. The Processor Loop allows users to insert an external signal processor (such as the McIntosh MQ112 Environmental Equalizer or MEN220 Room Correction System), dynamic range expanders, or other devices without having to place it between the preamplifier and power amplifier(s). This is usually more convenient and can allow for better performance. The C55 Solid State Preamplifier also offers a new headphone amplifier with Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD) technology.

Same But With Tubes
For those who see the name McIntosh invariably tied to tube masterpieces, the C2800 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier fulfills the dream in terms of a unique listening experience that transcends expectations. At the heart of the C2800 lies methodically designed vacuum tube circuitry. Leveraging the latest designs to all but eliminate noise and distortion, the C2800 reduces them to minuscule levels. Its four vacuum tubes (3x 12AX7A and one 12AT7) deliver the goods, complemented by electronic bass and treble circuits that allow for volume level adjustments of low and high frequencies in precise 1dB steps. In addition, the C2800 remembers tone control circuitry bypass settings for each input.

Otherwise, the C2800 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier offers the same exact features of its solid-state brother, with 16 inputs, including 9 analog and 7 digital connections, improved DAC technology, Processor Loop (which enables extra coloration from the tube circuits), and even includes the eco-friendly Power Management System to save on power when not in use.

The C55 Solid State Preamplifier and the C2800 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier are available for purchase through authorized McIntosh dealers with an MSRP of $9,000 USD each.
