Avengers: The Kang Dynasty – Everything we know

There’s been a lot going on with both the MCU and Kang, including star Jonathan Majors – to keep you up to scratch, here’s what we know about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, including its release date, plot and cast speculation, and more.

So far, we’ve had four Avengers movies: The Avengers (also known as Avengers Assemble in the UK), Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The latter two films were a climactic double-bill capping off the Infinity Saga, with Thanos snapping half of all life in the universe to dust, and eventually fading to ash himself.

That was just one saga, and two new Avengers movies are already on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s horizon. So, here’s what we know about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, from its release date to cast and plot speculation.

Avengers The Kang Dynasty release date: When is it coming out?

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is due for release on May 1, 2026.

Its release date was originally set for May 2, 2025, but this was pushed back a year by Disney in June 2023 amid a slew of major changes to the MCU movie schedule.

It is the third of four confirmed movies in the MCU’s Phase Six so far, coming after Deadpool 3 and Fantastic Four, and before Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.

Although it was set to be directed by Daniel Destin Cretton, Deadline broke the news in November 2023 that he will be stepping down to focus on other MCU projects, including Shang-Chi 2 and Wonder Man.

It’s currently unclear who will helm the project, but industry inside Jeff Sneider suggested in a newsletter: “The way it’s been explained to me is that Secret Wars is essentially a two-parter, so Marvel wants someone who can tackle both movies. Possibly Matt Shakman after Fantastic Four?”

Is there an Avengers: The Kang Dynasty trailer?

No, there isn’t a trailer for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty at the time of writing.

The movie has yet to enter production, so it’s unlikely we’ll see any footage for a while. We’ll update this space once a trailer is shared online, and in the meantime, you can check out Kang in the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania below:

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty cast – Who’s in it?

Jonathan Majors, who first played Kang the Conqueror, the villain who debuted in Loki as He Who Remains and appeared as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, will not reprise his title role.

In late March, 2023, Majors was arrested for allegedly assaulting the woman he was with, per The Direct.

Although he appeared in Loki Season 2, his arc finished in a way that would allow it to come to an end, and it’s now confirmed that’s all we’ll ever see of Majors’ Kang portrayal.

On December 18, 2023 Majors was found guilty of assault and subsequently dropped from the MCU.

While plans are still up in the air for now, it appears either the role of Kang will be recast, or the direction of this Phase will pivot away from the character altogether.

Rumors have suggested Doctor Doom might replace Kang as the big bad of the upcoming Avengers movies, in which case, The Kang Dynasty title might change. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is now simply being referred to as ‘Avengers 5.’

Another recent rumor indicated Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man in the movie, and he’ll be considered the lead.

Otherwise, official cast details have yet to be shared, but there are some sensible predictions to be made. As it’s an Avengers movie, it’s safe to expect any of the following characters:

  • Anthony Mackie as Captain America
  • Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier/White Wolf
  • Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
  • Don Cheadle as War Machine

  • Letitia Wright as Shuri
  • Danai Gurira as Okoye

There’s a few question marks. James Gunn said Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be “the last time people will see this team of Guardians”, so it’s unclear if they will return.

There’s also the anticipation of Marvel finding a way to resurrect Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. as Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.

Finally, while it’s likely, it remains to be seen whether the new Disney+ cast will graduate to the big-screen Avengers arena, including Haillee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight, Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk, and eventually, Charlie Cox as Daredevil.

As for behind the camera, Michael Waldron, who will also be writing for Secret Wars, will be penning the script.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty plot – What is it about?

While there aren’t any official plot details at the time of writing, the movie may adapt elements of the Kang Dynasty comics event, which made for a 16-part Marvel storyline between 2001 and 2002 – although it’s currently unclear whether Marvel wants to continue the Kang narrative.

The omnibus’ official synopsis reads: “Kang the Conqueror has been a foe of the Avengers for decades! Now, witness his ultimate triumph, as he brings all of his vast cross-time spanning legions to bear to conquer the Earth once and for all!

“Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes hold back the colossal forces arrayed against them or will they face defeat and subjugation beneath the boot of the Conqueror?”

At the end of Loki Season 1, Sylvie killing He Who Remains cause the timeline to splinter infinitely, resulting in the rise of Kang (and many variants) across the multiverse. However, Loki Season 2 left the story in a way that, if Marvel doesn’t want to continue with Majors, it can wrap up Kang’s story there.

What’s more, while former writer Jeff Loveness previously told Inverse that “the promise of this movie is to do the next generation of Avengers,” reported rumors suggest he too has been scrapped from the project as Marvel wants to move away from the Kang narrative. If the rumor turns out to be true that Doctor Doom will take his place, this would have major implications for the plot moving forward.

Another suggestion is that The Kang Dynasty might be replaced by Eternity Wars, after eagle-eyed fans noticed that Marvel had withdrawn trademarks for Eternity Saga, Nomad, and Runaways: New Era, but not for Avengers: Eternity Wars. In response to a post about the movie, one fan said on X/Twitter: “Could Eternity Wars be a backup title for The Kang Dynasty in case they need to throw out Majors?”

The recent hiring of Loki and Dr. Strange & the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron lends credence to many fan theories that Kang Dynasty will lean heavily into the rules of the multiverse established in those two projects.

We’ll be sure to keep this post updated as and when new details emerge.
