Bungie’s Marathon is stealing one of the best aspects of Destiny 2

Based on a job listing, Bungie’s new shooter Marathon will feature in-game content similar to fan-favorite Destiny 2 events.
Bungie may have announced Marathon at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, yet not much is known about the Destiny creator’s next multiplayer endeavor.
This revival of the studio’s 1994 shooter of the same name promises PvP-centric extraction gameplay. Players will assume the role of a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary who ventures to a lost planet where 30,000 inhabitants have suddenly gone missing.
Now a job posting for the developer has confirmed at least some of the content players can expect throughout the game’s life cycle.
Marathon will include seasonal events like Destiny 2
A new job listing (via The Game Post) for a Staff Events Systems Designer reveals that Bungie is currently looking to hire someone who can help the team build “compelling seasonal events that enhance replayability, deepen player engagement, and bring the world of Marathon to life.”
As with several other online games, this content will need to “seamlessly blend with tactical gameplay, world-building, and a dynamic live-service model” that appeals to both casual and competitive users.
These details, though sparse, indicate Marathon will feature limited-time events modeled after holiday themes or story content updates.
D2’s Festival of the Lost always begins in October.
Destiny 2’s expansions and the story content included in them has been one of the biggest highlights of playing the game for those who have stuck with the game long enough. And, yes, while seasonal content is a standard thing in the games industry, Bungie’s content really set the bar.
Bungie also supports Destiny 2 with in-game seasonal events, including the Festival of the Lost which appears in the fall and the Guardian Games festivities that players join in the springtime.
The former asks Guardians to participate in haunted activities, while the latter pits all three Destiny classes against one another to see who comes out on top.
Plenty of live-service games invite players to take part in seasonal events of some kind. But how Bungie will apply the idea to Marathon presently remains unknown.
More concrete information may surface sooner rather than later, however. Leaked details indicate the studio is preparing Marathon for pre-orders, which suggests a full reveal could be right around the corner.
