YouTuber Babe1Babe2 challenged his dad to play through the first Dark Souls game in its entirety in an effort to prove video games aren’t the waste of time. After 9 months, the point was proven.
The creator explained that he was only allowed to play video games for an hour a day max, with his father feeling as if it was a “waste of time” and that gaming rots your brain. After a long journey with Dark Souls, he felt the complete opposite.
Capturing the journey across 9 months worth of streams and videos, Babe’s father went from hesitant to completely sold by the end. He’s now a regular part of his son’s streams and enjoys both gaming and the ability to share the joys of gaming with his child and Twitch chat.
The weight of this experience really hit after his first time beating Ornnstein and Smough, with the 69 year-old man saying Dark Souls was “thrilling in a way I’d never experienced before.”
Father and son create a bond over beating Dark Souls
Dark Souls is notorious for being difficult, but it’s not hard because it requires a high APM or a ton of mechanical skill. The challenge comes from coming up with a strategy, managing resources, and not panicking under pressure.
Though it took him 1400 deaths to get to the end, Babe’s dad eventually beat Gwyn and became the true Lord of Cinder, earning himself the title of GigaDad. But what did he learn from the experience?
When asked why he wanted to do it by his son, GigaDad had this to say: “It’s because I love you. I learned a long time ago that, if you want to be close to somebody, you don’t try to convince them to do something you want to do, you go do something they want to do. You asked me to do it, I was very flattered. I never thought you’d do such a thing, especially since I’ve been so anti-video games for so long,” Babe’s father explained at the 27:25 mark. “You are the attraction, not the video game.”
“I did not really care to learn a bunch about video games, I wanted to learn a bunch about you. I accomplished both,” GigaDad concluded.
With their stream going from 5 viewers to 1400 by the end, all with Babe’s father learning how to interact with Twitch chat and overcoming a challenge he never thought he’d enjoy that much.
The 69-year-old man concluded that gaming is much better than sitting in front of a TV, saying that “you’re not a consumer, you’re a participant” while explaining why he thought Dark Souls was so much more engaging than a show or movie.
He even invited his wife to watch him beat a boss to try and convince her Dark Souls was worth playing, recommending she give it a shot. Seeing as his son’s YouTube channel is called Babe1Babe2 because it was made to show him playing games with his wife, playing through Dark Souls helped Babe’s father learn how video games enriched his son’s marriage.
What started as a dare between father and son turned into a life-changing journey for both men, with GigaDad already being hooked on Elden Ring.
