Comparisons between ER and HBO’s The Pitt are natural, and after this week’s gutting Episode 14, there’s one episode from the former you should also check out.
The Pitt has blown up in popularity over the last couple of weeks, proving viewers still have a taste for prestige medical dramas. While there are only 15 episodes – with the season finale coming next week – it’s been enough to deliver some heart-pounding drama and tragic turns.
Episode 14 focused on the aftermath of a mass shooting at a festival, with Robby and co. dealing with the emotional fallout of those lost among the casualties.
It’s a tough hour, and the swirling rumors surrounding the shooter make a fascinating comparison to a later ER episode on the same subject.
ER Season 7 Episode 22 is the perfect The Pitt follow-up
ER Season 7 Episode 22, “Rampage,” also focuses on a shooting incident. However, in this instance, we know the suspect to be Derek Fossen.
He’s the father of a young boy who was removed from his custody after it was discovered he was being abused. During his rampage, he ends up killing at least nine civilians before he’s stopped.
After he’s captured, he’s taken to the hospital after being shot himself. However, his return to the hospital marks a troubling moral problem for Dr Greene and the rest of the team in the ER.
We won’t spoil the rest of the episode here, but it makes an interesting comparison as to how The Pitt also treats their shooting plotline.
In The Pitt’s instance, the team debate who the shooter could be based on the little information they have. The shooter is eventually found deceased, having turned the gun on themselves.
The episode never actually reveals anything else about the identity of the suspect, because the doctors have to get back to their patients and move on as best as they can from the ordeal.
Here, we have two contrasting explorations: The Pitt’s is a chaotic, urgent questioning over who or where the suspect could be, and ER’s is a candid and shocking moral debate.
