Windows Snipping Tool Gets GIF-ed

Turn Your Screen Grabs Into Memes?

Windows Snipping Tool is one of the many old apps that Microsoft is updating, much like what they have done to other classics like Notepad.  They are testing out a new feature, the ability to turn your screen grabs into GIFs.  You can currently record video and sound with Snipping Tool, but it is recorded as an MP4 file.  That can create a rather large file and one that you might not be able to easily embed in a presentation or online.

Those in the Windows Insider program are now offered the ability to record up to 30 second GIF files instead, in either high or low quality and share them.  The internet loves GIF files, they are quick and easy to embed and certainly smaller than what you would see with an MP4.  It may not come in handy every day, but could certainly help with some projects.

In addition to GIFs, Microsoft has also added the ability to extract text from a screen grab, draw and hold to let you capture irregularly shaped screenshots and a a colour picker utility. You can also trim your MP4 videos to edit out content at the beginning and end of your recording, which will likely apply to GIF captures as well.

Last is the new ‘perfect screenshot’ feature which is being tested, it resizes the screen capture based on it’s content so a capture from a 4k display is not immense when shown on a 1080p display.  It is also available to Insiders, just like the GIF captures are, with general release some time in the future.
