Why there won’t be a Mr. Robot Season 5

Mr. Robot is one of the most acclaimed shows of the last decade, but in spite of both critical and commercial success, the series wrapped after four seasons, and shows no signs of returning.
The first episode of Mr. Robot dropped in June 2015, and the twisted tale of a hacker suffering something of an identity crisis immediately struck a chord with audiences.
The brainchild of Sam Esmail, Mr. Robot combined psychological thriller with complex character study, and was praised for its distinct visual style, as well as The Amateur star Rami Malek’s dazzling portrayal of troubled protagonist Elliot Alderson.
Mr. Robot was a huge hit for the USA Network, won a slew of awards, and built a loyal fanbase, but in December 2019, the series drew to a close via Season 4. With the show now streaming on Netflix, here’s why there won’t be a Season 5.
Mr Robot ended because there’s no more story to tell

Sam Esmail always said that he had a story arc in mind for Elliot’s character – and Mr. Robot at large – that would run for either four or five seasons, and he stayed true to that plan.
At the end of Season 3, Esmail told Entertainment Weekly: “The way we came to this decision is, after we wrapped Season 3, we went back into the writer’s room, and this whole time we’ve had the ending in mind, that’s what we’ve been building up to, and as an exercise I decided to put the last two episodes of what would be the series finale up on the board and I just asked the writers, if we were being honest with ourselves, how much story do we have from where we ended Season 3 to these last two episodes?
“We let that dictate how much story we had left, and it turned out that this would be the final season. It’s a little bit longer than our usual 10-episode season. To us, it was very fascinating to do it this way, because it was really the story letting us know when it was time to end it.”
There’s reconciliation in the show’s final episode, and redemption for Elliot, while the relentlessly downbeat and pessimistic series even concludes with a message of hope, as Anderson seemingly wakes up from the nightmare of his situation, and regains control of his own psyche, enabling him to move on with his life, potentially with Darlene by his side.

While shooting those final scenes, Rami Malek also said that he felt like it was the right place to end the show, telling EW: “I trust Sam implicitly, so if that is the way he thought he could close out this storyline, then I’m with him. I can say this, it is a very impactful, emotional, and I think clearly well thought out way to end this story and this series.”
With that tale therefore told, there’s currently no plans for Mr. Robot Season 5, with both creator and star moving on. Though Esmail hasn’t shifted too far away from the series, as he’s currently working on a movie called Panic Carefully, that’s described as “a paranoid thriller in the vein of Mr. Robot.”
While having played a Bond villain – and winning an Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody – Malek is now entering the action movie phase of his career, thanks to recent release The Amateur.
