Why A Minecraft Movie couldn’t use the deadliest biome in the Overworld

Fans have made Minecraft’s Overworld breathtaking for years, but the movie version is missing some key biomes. So, why weren’t they used?

As you’ve probably guessed from the trailer, A Minecraft Movie is going big and bold. We’re exploring the Overworld and the Nether in the live-action adaptation, with Piglin Queen Malgosha waiting to wreak havoc on our heroes of the hour.

Fans of the original game can also expect Easter eggs and YouTube cameos aplenty, but if you’re paying close attention, you’ll notice that something is missing.

With so many mobs, creatures, and biomes, the Minecraft team is spoilt for choice – but in a life-or-death adventure, why not use the deadliest place there is?

If every part of Minecraft was used in the movie, it wouldn’t work

As fans will know, the desert biome is the deadliest of the bunch, with no life sources able to survive long-term in the terrain (much like life). So why not use it in A Minecraft Movie? There’s a simple answer – there’s just not enough time.

Speaking to Dexerto, producer Torfi Orlafsson explained, “If we had wanted to cover everything within Minecraft, it would have just been like a slideshow. It wouldn’t have time to breathe or tell a story, so we had to take artistic choices with which biomes and mobs to feature. I’m pretty happy with what we picked.”

But does this mean they wouldn’t have wanted to include other things? Absolutely not. “A desert biome would have been really fun,” director Jared Hess added. “We kind of have a little bit of it, like in the Redstone Mines. A snow biome would have been great too.”

While we get a nod to the desert in the blink of an eye, fans shouldn’t expect snow to make a fleeting appearance. Whether what we see in the movie affects future gameplay remains to be seen.

“We can’t promise that, but there are some connections,” Orlafsson said about movie scenes in-game. “The Piglins hanging platform you see came out in Minecraft Legends years ago, and it was amazing the team wanted to use that. There are recently announced changes you’ll see in the film too. So there are connections.”

A Minecraft Movie is in cinemas now. Check out our review, the Easter egg you’ve definitely missed, and why the ending and post-credits are the best scenes of the bunch.
