When to take a bathroom break during F1

Brad Pitt’s new racing drama F1 clocks in at a butt-numbing 155 minutes, so if you need to hit the bathroom during the movie, here’s our advice for when to go.

F1 stars Brad Pitt as former Formula 1 driver Sonny Hayes, who comes out of retirement to help an old friend, and mentor a young rookie.

In our F1 review, Dexerto called it “a racing movie that does everything a sports story should,” but complained that “the repetitive nature of Formula 1 – as well as the tale being told – frequently makes this speed-obsessed feature something of a slog.”

Should you need a comfort break during those 2 hours and 35 minutes, the following is our advice for when’s best to go. Meaning SPOILERS ahead…

Hit the bathroom around the 100 minute mark of F1

If you want to get the full F1 experience, you shouldn’t leave your seat. But if you are busting for a bathroom break, we recommend hitting the loo approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes into the movie.

When Sonny Hayes starts hooking up with his team’s technical director Kate McKenna – played by Kerry Condon – start walking. Not because of the characters’ lack of professionalism, but because we all saw it coming based on the duo’s flirting up to this point.

Their tryst is followed by a nightclub scene that features dancers hanging from the ceiling, and in which rookie racer Josh Pearce (Damson Idris) tells his manager that he isn’t feeling the vibe, and so decides to depart. Which isn’t exactly a key moment.

That should have you covered. But if you need a bit longer, the next scene also articulates stuff that we’ve already pretty much figured out.

Sonny wakes up from a nightmare about his crash, meaning more footage of the incident at the Spanish Grand Prix some 30 years ago. He then talks to Kate on the balcony of her hotel room, where she asks why he’s still racing.

That’s a key question in the story’s narrative, but we’ve already spent more than 90 minutes watching and witnessing the answer – Sonny loves to race.

He discusses his past, when he was going to be the best there ever was, until that aforementioned crash took everything away. Which is information we have. And he talks about getting in the zone, racing to the point where peace descends, and no one can touch him. “Because in that moment, I’m flying.”

Those words connect with the big finale, but hopefully you’ll be back in your seat by this point. Team owner Ruben Cervantes then knocks on Kate’s door, and announces that “They’re coming for our car!” Which is when the plot fully kicks back into gear.
