Get ready to say goodbye to the Winchesters, because Supernatural is leaving Netflix in 2025 and its departure date is set – and there’s a frustrating reason.
Long before he created The Boys, Eric Kripke was the showrunner on Supernatural, following Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) as they hunt monsters, demons, ghosts, and other paranormal beings.
It was extraordinarily popular, running for 15 seasons (however, according to many fans you don’t need to watch beyond the fifth season). It’s been on Netflix for five years, and it’s still one of its most-watched titles; between January 2023 and June 2024, it amassed nearly 40 million views.
Alas, there’s a big drawback of the streaming service boom: movies and TV shows rarely commit to one platform forever.
Supernatural leaves Netflix in December 2025
Supernatural is expected to leave Netflix on December 18, 2025.
That means you have 302 days to watch the entire series before it’s removed from the platform. There are 327 episodes in total, so as long as you watch an episode every day (and squeeze in an extra episode or two here and there), you’ll finish the show in time.
We should say, Netflix hasn’t explicitly confirmed this date. However, it’s a solid estimate by What’s on Netflix, given other CW shows (like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin) have left the platform just over five years after they were added to Netflix.
Why is Supernatural being removed from Netflix?
The CWSupernatural is leaving Netflix because The CW didn’t renew its streaming deal with the platform.
The CW first entered into an agreement with Netflix in 2011, with the streamer licensing the rights to “stream more than 700 hours” of the channel’s programming, as well as future shows.
“These rights extend for four years after each series, current or future, ends its broadcast run on the network,” the original press release read.
It benefited both parties: Netflix got a constant inflow of content, and the platform’s growing popularity gave shows (particularly Riverdale) a big bump.
The deal was renewed in 2016 with slightly different terms, with shows becoming available on Netflix eight days after their season finales.
Mark Pedowitz, The CW’s former president, said: “Since the initial landmark deal in 2011, the CW’s programming has enjoyed tremendous success and increased exposure through Netflix, and our new agreement not only continues but enhances this valuable relationship.”
However, The CW chose to take its shows elsewhere in 2019; more specifically, its owners ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia hoped to shift the channel’s programming to their own streaming services, Max and Paramount Plus.
This echoes Disney’s breakaway from Netflix with the launch of Disney Plus, choosing to prioritize its own platform over third-party streaming agreements (hence why Daredevil and the pre-Disney Plus MCU shows are no longer on Netflix).
