When Calls the Heart Season 12 finale ending is the most devastating of all time

Regardless of what you’re hoping for in the When Calls the Heart Season 12 finale, I can guarantee you’re absolutely not expecting this. Warning: spoilers ahead… and you’ll need tissues.

Over the course of the last two months, we’ve had every type of emotion possible in Hope Valley. We’ve learned to dance the Charleston, been caught up in a criminal investigation from the early 1900s, and had our hearts ripped in two when Jack’s big secret was revealed.

But that isn’t all When Calls the Heart has had to offer. Episode 11 saw Little Jack (Jack’s son, not the guy who died in a landslide) diagnosed with diabetes, putting his life in danger. He’s now getting insulin, but it’s likely not the last of his problems.

In fact… it definitely isn’t. Not only is the When Calls the Heart Season 12 finale completely unexpected, but it’s possibly fatal.

Little Jack is a miracle in the When Calls the Heart Season 12 finale

A miracle has happened at the start of the When Calls the Heart Season 12 finale. It’s been months since Episode 11 and Little Jack is getting stronger by the day. He’s taken well to the insulin, with graduation and the end of the school year drawing near. “Where you go, I go” Nathan tells Elizabeth after they share a romantic moment in the street.

Rosemary hounds Bill over where the Garrison gold is, not wishing to run her latest story until they have an answer. Bill tells her to accept not having one, but Rosemary wants to go undercover to interview Edie. She’s convinced Edie remembers something about her uncle Ernie she’s not yet shared, and Rosemary wants to find out what under the guise of promoting her new office.

Nathan recommends Oliver graduates with honors after his help taking down Sonny Garrison. He hasn’t even handed in his final exam yet, but Nathan’s already got a tip on Oliver’s next post in Fort McNeal. That doesn’t go down well with Oliver, and Nathan can’t work out why.

At the school’s final project presentation, two things become clear – Oliver definitely has feelings for Allie, while Minnie is having a hard time with Angela moving away to college. Lucas wants to find a way to get Elizabeth’s program into public education, claiming he “has some ideas.” Mei, Faith, Florence, and Elizabeth come up with a way to give Angela a parting gift that can also be a surprise for Minnie.

Elizabeth’s mom shows a way out

Elizabeth’s mother Charlotte writes to say she’s opened a boarding house in Cape Fullerton, prompting Elizabeth to move there in order to have Little Jack closer to an official insulin treatment center. Annoyed by what Charlotte has said, Elizabeth wonders if saying goodbye to Hope Valley for good actually would be the best thing for Jack’s health. Faith tells her disrupting Jack’s life so much “doesn’t seem necessary,” but she acknowledges things could change for the worse. Rosemary says they can file the letter away as “useful information if the time comes.”

Lucas asks Edie to be his lawyer, which she accepts over a game of cards. She tells him about Ernie, which Lucas has already guessed. Edie thinks Ernie wanted her to find the Garrison loot, wanting Lucas’ help to find and return it. “Although the thought of living on the lam with a pot of gold does sound…” Edie starts. “Romantic?” Lucas finishes. She blushes, and the two toast their next adventure.

Oliver fails his final exams on purpose

Rosemary is convinced she’s sparked a memory in Edie’s subconscious after their interview, reporting back to Bill and Nathan. According to Edie, Ernie always said the ranch is where “wishes came true,” prompting Bill to believe his theory is right. The Garrisons thought the gold was at the Lover’s Tree, with Ernie possibly overhearing their plot and reburying it. Where? The wishing well, of course.

Elizabeth tells Nathan Oliver is the only student who regressed in their final exam, which matches up to his last mountie report. Nathan thinks it’s deliberate, destroying his career to stay in Hope Valley and be with Allie. “Oliver shouldn’t be putting his life on hold for anybody… nobody should,” Elizabeth says, looking at her mother’s letter. When Nathan calms down her sudden panic, Elizabeth tells him she loves him. “No matter what, our life together is always here in Hope Valley,” Nathan tells her.

Later on, Elizabeth confronts Oliver about why he’s purposefully trying to fail. Oliver says it’s because he was just starting to feel normal and hasn’t been given the chance to be a kid. Elizabeth reassures him he can take as much time as he needs without rushing off to adulthood. She thinks a solution could be found between the two of them and the constable.

The Garrison gang coins are found

At Ernie’s cabin, Lucas finds a jar full of pennies. Edie tells him about throwing them in the wishing well as a kid before accidentally finding a double-headed join in the jar. It’s just the one, but points them in the right direction towards the well. They get there just before Rosemary, Bill, and Nathan arrive, catching them red-handed.

After Rosemary berates Edie for withholding information, the five agree they all want the same thing for Ernie’s stash. Sure enough, it’s not long before they come across a chest, but it’s padlocked. They take it back to the jail to try and pick the lock. The chest is full of gold coins, with Lucas suggesting Edie can pay back what Ernie owes using the finder’s fee.

Edie notices something about the map the others have missed. When held to a flame, there’s a secret message written in hidden ink. Apparently, Ernie used to leave them for Edie as a child. It’s Ernie’s story of how he found the gold, and it’s exactly as Bill theorized it happened. He used the money to keep the ranch and put Edie through law school because she had the “biggest heart” of all the Martells.

The kids graduate from school

At the cafe, the gang show Minnie Angela’s surprise. They’ve made a quilt of her favorite things to remind her of home, and so Minnie will know Angela is being looked after. They’ve even used different textures and braille so Angela can feel the patterns. Minnie still can’t believe Angela is leaving, but she’s brought to tears by the gesture.

During the graduation party, Elizabeth wants to thank Mike and Mei for giving up their second honeymoon to help get Jack’s insulin transported. Along with the rest of Hope Valley, they’ve all chipped in to pay for their third attempt. It’s to Miami, and the pair are thrilled.

Nathan and Oliver chat, with Nathan prompting Oliver to share what’s wrong so other people can help. He tells Oliver he needs a deputy for at least another year, but Oliver has to take the final test again to be eligible. He’s made up, with Elizabeth and Nathan figuring out Allie definitely has feelings for Oliver too.

Little Jack takes a turn for the worse

Lucas tells Elizabeth he’s arranged for her to present her curriculum at the education conference the following month. It’s a three-day trip in July, with Elizabeth wanting time to think about it. Nathan doesn’t understand what there is to think about, with Elizabeth replying she shouldn’t be away from Jack for that long. “If we’ve learned anything from this whole ordeal, it’s that you can lean on me a bit more,” Nathan says.

Edie arrives to play her usual card game with Lucas, only to end up on the dancefloor with him. Allie tells Angela how much she’s going to miss her, having made her own gift in braille. The entire town ends up dancing the Charleston, but things soon take a turn for the worse.

Back at home, Elizabeth tries talking to Jack about a hike Nathan mentioned earlier but gets no response. He’s out cold, leaving Elizabeth screaming for help. Faith tells her the lab has been getting calls from patients experiencing new symptoms, thinking the latest supply wasn’t properly refrigerated in transit. Jack’s injections for the previous day haven’t been effective, with Faith trying to find an emergency supply.

Elizabeth knows where to go, though – Cape Fullerton. Faith suggests getting going tonight would be their best option, with Elizabeth responding “Best bet tonight… or for the future?” Faith wants to reply there’s nothing she can’t do for Jack, but after researching the lab, they’re far more advanced with technology Hope Valley doesn’t have access to. She advises Elizabeth might be better off moving closer to the hospital for the immediate future.

Elizabeth and Nathan leave Hope Valley… for good?

Little Jack has come around, and asks if he’ll have to stay in Cape Fullerton. “We’ll see, at least for the meantime,” Elizabeth replies. Rosemary offers to find Nathan and tell him what’s happened. Minnie brings food for the trip, assuring her the miracle “is that you learn you can handle it.” Elizabeth says she doesn’t want to be strong, with Minnie replying she can carry more than she thinks. “And you will. For him.”

The taxi arrives, with Minnie saying “We’ll be here for you, always.” Nathan is back, with Elizabeth asking Rosemary to give him a letter. She leaves with Jack, looking back at the house she’s leaving behind. “I don’t know how long we’ll be gone, but I could never ask you to uproot your life and Allie’s,” the letter says. “Not like this.”

Nathan arrives back, having just missed them. Allie finds him, giving the letter Rosemary gave to her. As Elizabeth and Jack continue in the taxi, another approaches, beeping them from behind. It’s Nathan and Allie, who tell them “Family sticks together.” “Where you go, I go,” Nathan repeats as they leave.

“I know everything seems uncertain tonight, but no matter what, somehow we will return to Hope Valley,” Elizabeth’s final voiceover tells us.
