Warzone veterans believe Verdansk map return is a “waste” without this staple feature

Old Warzone players are calling for the return of an iconic feature alongside Verdansk’s comeback to truly capture the nostalgic essence of the first season and prevent it from being a short-lived gimmick.

Activision unveiled a first look at the new Verdansk map on March 21, showcasing its tactical layout with all major POIs. Set for an April 3 release, the map will arrive as part of Call of Duty’s Season 3 update for Warzone and Black Ops 6.

While excitement is high for Verdansk’s return, some veteran players have argued that without the classic engine, and in particular, vanilla movement mechanics, it is a “waste.”

Verdansk doubters say old Warzone hype won’t last long

“It just sucks we can’t enjoy the map on the superior engine/game,” read the top comment on a Reddit post revealing the map layout.

“Literally my only complaint… I don’t even hate the new movement but man it just doesn’t feel grounded enough. OG WZ felt so proper. I’m gonna give it a try but I know it won’t be the exact same, one responded.

Adding, “Fortnite has separate movement mechanics for their OG and Regular versions so I don’t see how COD couldn’t make that happen.”

“Bringing back what looks like the MW19 Verdansk without the MW19 gameplay just feels like such a waste. This might bring a few players back for a short period, but it isn’t going to have any lasting impact. The gameplay is the problem,” another stated, which echoed various users’ comments.

Despite the calls, some weren’t as concerned about the newer and existing movement mechanics, which according to leaks, the developers have adjusted the map to improve movement.

“The engine isn’t really that deep, just give me this map,” one said, as another added: “Ya the movement is gonna be s**t but if we get the original vehicles back with the map and the Kilo/HDR I’m gonna be a happy man no matter what. All my buddies are getting ready to redownload Warzone just for this.”

Warzone’s player count and CoD’s player numbers overall have been steadily declining, and 2025 has been no exception.

Verdansk’s return could be the Battle Royale’s last hope, but without its classic movement mechanics and features which have been called for previously, it runs the risk of not fulfilling its nostalgic potential.
