Warzone devs confirm they made Verdansk TTK faster to help “casual” players

Verdansk returned to Warzone with a faster time-to-kill than we’ve seen for many years, and the devs have explained the thinking behind the decision.

The Warzone Season 3 update marked the long-awaited return of the Verdansk map for the first time since it was replaced by Caldera in late 2021. It came with all the iconic POIs that fans remember, as well as old features like Contracts and floating loot.

It’s clear that the devs pulled out all the stops to make the map look and feel like it did all those years ago. This philosophy even extended to the TTK, which was made significantly quicker through major damage buffs to Black Ops 6 weapons.

TTK is always a hot topic among the community, with some preferring the unforgiving gunfights that faster speeds provide, while others lean more towards a slower TTK that raises the skill gap.

Now, the Warzone devs have explained that the decision to speed up the TTK in Season 3 was to make Verdansk more welcoming to casual players.

Verdansk’s faster TTK was designed to attract casuals

In an interview with IGN, game director Pete Actipis said that the time-to-kill currently seen in Warzone is “faster” than Urzikstan, and “equivalent” to the OG Verdansk. He went on to mention that this was done deliberately to cater for less experienced players.

“What we wanted to go back for now was [to] make it more of a casual, friendly kind of, ‘if I’m not good at hitting straight shots, I have an opportunity, I’m not going to get destroyed every gun battle,’ he explained. “There’s also a lot more excitement of like, ‘oh, I have an opportunity to get a kill.’”

However, although a faster time-to-kill does naturally make matches more of a level playing field, he also mentioned that the goal was never to eliminate the skill gap entirely.

“That being said, it is not like we’re trying to remove skill from the game. There’s still a lot of skill involved in this game, but it’s approachable, which is the key difference there,” he continued, before adding that movement goes a long way toward giving each fight nuance.

As mentioned before, it seems like everybody has a different opinion when it comes to TTK, so finding a happy medium is a difficult task. With this in mind, Actipis went on to say that they’ll be keeping an eye on the feedback, but admitted that the team is happy with the way it is at the moment.

“We like right now where the TTK sits. We will evaluate as the game progresses and see what our fans think. We’re always evolving and we’ll react appropriately based on that. But right now it seems like people are enjoying it.”

Although it seems unlikely that we’ll get any major adjustments across the board any time soon, don’t be surprised to see specific weapons nerfed, as the CR-56 AMAX and HDR have dominated the meta since Verdansk came back.
