Two More Canon Lenses Coming Soon

Canon is set to release two more lenses alongside or soon after the three hybrid lenses launching on October 30, 2024. The three hybrids include the highly anticipated RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM, and the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z. Notably, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z will be compatible with teleconverters, making it a versatile choice for photographers needing extended reach.

While there has been speculation about whether the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z will be available in both black and Canon’s signature white, leaked images from July suggest both colors may be offered. This decision could be strategic, as the white coating on Canon lenses is more than just an aesthetic choice. The white paint helps manage heat build-up on Canon’s fluorite-coated lenses, particularly useful for photographers shooting in warmer, harsher conditions. At the same time, videographers and cinematographers often prefer black lenses for their non-reflective surfaces, which help avoid unwanted reflections during filming. And, of course, the appeal of Canon’s white lenses as a status symbol in the professional photography world can’t be ignored.

In addition to the three hybrids, Canon has hinted at the release of two more lenses. One of these is believed to be the RF-S 7.8mm F4 STM Dual Lens for spatial video, which Canon has been developing since June. This lens is expected to generate significant excitement, especially among VR enthusiasts, as Canon continues to explore virtual reality technology. Some speculate that Canon’s VR lens offerings are, in part, designed to make a splash at trade shows with impressive VR demonstrations.

The second lens remains a bit of a mystery. While there have been whispers of a new L-series super-telephoto zoom, sources are divided on the details. Many are hoping for the long-rumored RF 200-500mm f/4L, a lens that has been discussed extensively for months. However, conflicting information, particularly about the focal length, leaves the exact nature of this lens uncertain. There has also been mention of an f/5.6L super-telephoto, but again, the specifics are unclear. Despite the speculation, these rumors have sparked further discussion among Canon enthusiasts, even as insiders remain tight-lipped due to strict NDAs.
