Twitch streamer DougDoug pitches AI-written movie to Hollywood screenwriter live on stream

Twitch streamer DougDoug has never shied away from chaos, but his July 9 livestream may have been his most ambitious yet. In a two-hour event titled ‘Can we write and pitch a movie to a REAL Hollywood screenwriter?’, Doug and his community set out to do exactly that.
The twist? His community came up with creative ideas for the screenplay, which were then reviewed by AI.
Using the same AI model, Lexter, that acclaimed writer-director Scott Z. Burns used to create his new Audible Original, What Could Go Wrong?, Doug collaborated with his chat to write an original screenplay from scratch.
The first hour of the stream saw Twitch chat and AI working together to shape a film concept, complete with character arcs, dramatic stakes, and absurd comedy.
Then, in a surprise second act, Burns himself joined the call.
Known for Contagion, The Report, and Extrapolations, Scott Z. Burns is one of Hollywood’s most respected writers, and his reaction to Doug’s AI-assisted script didn’t disappoint. The conversation quickly turned from story structure to the future of screenwriting itself.
“To me, the danger isn’t what I will lose as a writer by using [AI] – like when you use Google, what are you losing?” Burns pondered. “For example I have comedian friends who don’t like when their stuff is ripped off. And you can type in, ‘tell a joke in the style of Alex Edelman’, or whoever. But Alex and others would acknowledge that they’ve studied really great comedians … that’s where this all gets very confusing and tricky.
“As a writer, I think writing screenplays is not nearly as important as some of the things people in science are doing. I know someone right now who is in need of very, very complicated heart surgery. They’re building a digital twin of his heart, so that the surgeon can practice on it before they crack his chest. I don’t see anything really bad with that application, which I’m sure involves AI.”
Rounding out their conversation, Burns brought it back to the ultimate goal of any media, which is satisfying the audience: “Does the audience care about AI or not, or does the audience just want it to be good?”
Throughout the stream, Burns offered insight into how What Could Go Wrong? was made, and why he chose to collaborate with Lexter in the first place. The Audible Original explores what happens when a near-future society relies on AI for every major decision, from personal relationships to global conflict.
DougDoug’s stream brought those questions to life in real time, as human creativity and machine learning tried to share the same page. If you missed the broadcast, the full VOD is available on DougDoug’s YouTube channel. You can also listen to What Could Go Wrong now, exclusively on Audible.
