Jake Larson, better known as “Papa Jake” to his 1.2 million TikTok followers, has died at 102 after spending his final years sharing WWII stories and inspiring millions online.
The decorated D-Day veteran died peacefully on July 17, according to a message posted on his TikTok account by his granddaughter, McKaela Larson.
“He went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end,” she wrote. “I am so thankful to have shared my Papa Jake with you all. You meant the world to him.”

Born in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson lied about his age to enlist in the National Guard in 1938 at just 15 years old. By 1944, he was landing on Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion, narrowly surviving enemy fire as part of one of the most pivotal moments of WWII – something he even discussed on the Unsubscribe podcast.
He later fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Bronze Star and France’s Legion of Honor for his service.
In his later years, Larson became a surprise social media sensation. His “Story Time with Papa Jake” TikTok account captivated millions with firsthand tales from the war, often paired with heartfelt tributes to fallen comrades.
Tributes have poured in across social media since the announcement.
“Rest peacefully Papa Jake! We thank you for your service and your beautiful stories,” one fan wrote.
“Heaven has gained another Hero,” another added.
Though Papa Jake has died, his family says his mission of remembrance isn’t over.
“When the time is right, I will continue to share Papa Jake’s stories and keep his memory alive,” McKaela said.
