Thunderbolts breaks historic MCU record with post-credits scene

Thunderbolts* features a pair of post-credits scenes, one of which sets a major record for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thunderbolts* is a movie that has far-reaching consequences for the MCU, most notably during an action-packed ending, and an eventful post-credits scene that sets up future events.
The film sees a team of anti-heroes assembling that includes the likes of Ghost, US Agent, Taskmaster, and Yelena Belova, who then come face-to-face with a terrifying supervillain called ‘Bob.’
That story is concluded by a funny mid-credits scene, and a post-credits sequence that’s also a record-breaker. We’ll go into details below, so beware of massive SPOILERS ahead…
Thunderbolts sets post-credits scene record
Clocking in at 2 minutes and 55 seconds, Thunderbolts* features the longest post-credits scene in the history of Marvel movies.
This is ironic, as the 2 hours and 6 minutes runtime makes the film one of the shortest MCU features.
But there’s much to pack into the concluding scene, which plays out in the ‘Watchtower,’ (formerly Avengers Tower), where The New Avengers (themselves formerly the Thunderbolts) are arguing over who owns the rights to the ‘Avengers’ name, with Red Guard coming up with the hilarious ‘Avengerz’ solution.
While they’re joking, Yelena references the “huge space crisis” that no one is telling them about. That prompts a request for a “threat analysis” that results in satellite images of an “extra-dimensional ship entering atmosphere,” which in turn leads to a big reveal of the Fantastic Four’s ship.
All of this helps set the scene for the next three Marvel movies – The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars. Which is a lot, hence the length.
But it isn’t the longest post-credits scene in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as that honor goes to a sequence at the end of the Hawkeye TV series, which features a full number from ‘Rogers: The Musical,’ and clocks in at a whopping 4 minutes and 47 seconds.
Thunderbolts* is in cinemas now. You can also learn where the Thunderbolts name comes from, read about why Baron Zemo isn’t in the movie, and check out what’s happening with every upcoming MCU movie and show.
