Right at the end of The Way Home Season 3 finale, Sam’s identity was called into question. He clearly isn’t a Bishop now, but who exactly is he? Warning: spoilers ahead!
In The Way Home‘s final moments, the letters Del received are on the table, with a new one from Jacob. He says he doesn’t want to put his family in danger, thinking the letters will stop if he disappears. She gets a call from Sam, explaining Jacob has left.
“Well it’s going to be okay, I promise” Sam says as we cut to him clearly standing by the pond. “How do you know that, Sam?” “I just… do” Sam replies, looking over the water.
Not only do we have the assumption here that Sam can time travel, but that Sam isn’t really Sam at all. Are you following? The binge-worthy TV show clearly has a hidden secret set to be exposed in Season 4, and there’s three obvious answers while we wait.
Sam is really older Jacob in The Way Home
The most obvious of our answers is that Sam is really Jacob from a future timeline. As we know, pond rules stipulate you can only travel back in time rather than forward, meaning if Sam really can time travel, he’s from the future.
At this point, there’s no one else who really fits the bill for Sam age-wise. If Casey is supposedly somebody’s child from the present-day, Sam would have to be the older version of somebody grown for that to make sense. Unless Elliot has gained the ability to time travel on his own (he had to be taken back in time by Jacob, remember), that really only leaves the latter.
There’s a slight issue here, though. Sam was introduced as Del’s kind-of boyfriend, having secretly been seeing each other for around six months by the time Season 3 gets going. If the pair were… intimate… it breaches content Hallmark definitely doesn’t want to touch.
However, we’ve really got nothing more than to suggest the two have been companions. Del’s had a face like thunder every time we’ve seen her, so passion probably isn’t on the cards.
Sam Bishop is really Samuel Augustine
Aside from the Landrys and Goodwins, the Augustines are another important family in The Way Home. Susanna is the contingent in the 1800s, while Elliot is the modern-day descendant. But has a third Augustine now been thrown into the mix?
This is a guess purely down to clever wordplay. We know creators like to subtly name their characters after other things, including real-life people. The inclusion of Augustine could be a reference to the church of St. Augustine, where said saint was a bishop. Augustine, Bishop… see what I did there?
Obviously, there’s issues here about the use of the pond, but we don’t actually know if Sam can use it. All we know is he’s ominously looking at it, meaning he could merely know secrets about other time travelers. Granted, it’s the weakest of our three choices, but it’s not a total stretch.
He’s another Landry brought in to bring Del down
Here’s the big guns. To time travel through the pond, you have to be a Landry. So if Sam isn’t Jacob, could he be a Landry descendant all his own? Sam and Del might remind you of another more famous story (sorry, Hallmark): Samson and Delilah.
If you don’t know your religious history very well, here’s an overview. Samson was a Nazirite, set apart from birth by God to do a special task. And Samson was given immense strength by God. When he became an adult, Samson fell in love with a woman, named Delilah, who tricked him into telling her the secret to his great strength, which she then in turn told to his enemies the Philistines.
The source of Samson’s strength was that no razor had touched his hair. So Delilah cut his hair and called his enemies to attack him. They took Samson prisoner, gouged out his eyes and then took him to the temple of their god.
Samson asked to be placed near the pillars holding up their temple. Samson then prayed to God for strength one last time, which God granted, and Samson pushed the pillars down which killed him and many of the Philistines.
Could Sam really be a red herring to set Del up in Season 4? We still don’t know who wrote the letters… just saying.
