The Way Home Season 3’s astonishing finale still messed up one crucial storyline

I still can’t believe how much I enjoyed The Way Home Season 3’s finale, but there’s something bugging me now Season 4’s renewal is confirmed. Warning: spoilers ahead!
When it comes to the Ponderer community, I’m a new kid on the block. I didn’t really get what the fuss was about, I found it difficult to follow along with, and generations of a family jumping into a pond to visit their ancestors? That just seemed laughable.
Two months later, I’ve done a complete 180. Not one episode has gone by where I haven’t gasped or been really excited by a plot reveal, and I’ve grown to love the world I was once dumbfounded by. What’s even better is the Season 3 finale took things to another level.
If I’m honest with you, I’m not sure I’ve ever watched a more satisfying episode of TV in my life. Answers were neatly and clearly laid out for the questions we wanted answering, the overall narrative arc didn’t miss a beat, and the reveals were actually GOOD. Nobody really had a clue with their Season 3 theories, and I’m included in that.
While I can easily guess where Season 4 is heading (that’s a good thing, not a diss), I can’t help but be peeved by one question showrunners have chosen not to answer… and it involves our most elusive time-traveler.
Why didn’t The Way Home Season 3 finale reveal Casey’s identity?
There are five main questions Season 4 is going to need to answer in 2026. One of these is who Casey actually is – and in my opinion, it shouldn’t have been included at all.
Why? The Season 3 finale was the ideal time to bring the truth to light and the showrunners stalled it. Instead, we got a dismissal. Casey definitely isn’t Alice’s kid, debunking one of the most popular fan theories throughout Season 3.
Since their introduction in Season 2, Casey’s involvement in Landry-Goodwin history has been strung out like a never-ending line of washing. Rather than having tangible answers, Casey has done the equivalent of playing 20 questions, merely answering yes or no in the present-day timeline if we’re lucky.
The Season 3 finale was supposed to be the moment when we finally broke through that, getting more information that Casey is a Goodwin and a Landry from some point in the future. Helping Jacob out in his time of need was a nice touch (and possibly another clue), but it wasn’t enough.
There’s something else about this that bugs me, too. All of our other cliffhangers – Jacob disappearing, Sam’s real identity, Elliot’s mom – are all brand-new to us. They’re all dramatic moments that happened in those intense final scenes rather than being anything we’d seen coming previously (honestly, I was shook, if the kids still say that).
But Casey’s lineage is old news. It’s something we’ve been round the houses with, and in another year’s time, might start wearing a little thin. Perhaps this is just me impatiently waiting to find out the truth. But God, does Casey’s impact on The Way Home now need to be explosive to fully pay off?
