The Pitt star Noah Wyle responds to “profoundly sad” ER lawsuit

Noah Wyle has publicly addressed the lawsuit against his new series The Pitt, saying it makes him “profoundly sad and disappointed.”

The Pitt has been the breakout TV hit of 2025, with the story of 15 hours inside a Pittsburgh emergency room proving to be a hit with critics and audiences alike. This is likely why Season 2 was confirmed before the Season 1 finale aired.

Noah Wyle takes center stage as put-upon physician Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, with the role harking back to his glory days as Dr. John Carter in TV classic ER.

But a lawsuit claiming his new show is an unauthorised reboot of his old show means a cloud has hung over The Pitt, and Wyle has now addressed that controversy for the first time.

Noah Wyle says The Pitt lawsuit “taints the legacy” of ER

The case is being brought against Warner Bros. TV, as well as Wyle, executive producer John Wells, and showrunner R. Scott Gemill, by the estate of ER creator Michael Crichton. The lawsuit claims that they collectively came up with The Pitt after plans to bring ER back were blocked by Crichton’s estate.

Warner Bros. has called the allegations both “false” and “meritless,” and now Wyle has issued his own response, via an interview in Variety.

“The only thing that I can legally speak to is how I feel emotionally, which is just profoundly sad and disappointed,” says the actor. “This taints the legacy, and it shouldn’t have. At one point, this could have been a partnership. And when it wasn’t a partnership, it didn’t need to turn acrimonious. But on the 30th anniversary of ER, I’ve never felt less celebratory of that achievement than I do this year.”

Wyle also underlines the differences in the shows by stating that once the reboot was off, “we pivoted as far in the opposite direction as we could in order to tell the story we wanted to tell and not for litigious reasons, but because we didn’t want to retread our own creative work.”

He ends by adding: “We really wanted to find something new for ourselves. And in some ways, that’s what was so disheartening about the whole thing. We really felt like we’d done it.”
