The Minecraft Movie is on track to make back its budget and then some despite scathing critic reviews, with younger audiences going crazy over it and having a great time in theatres.
Even if this film didn’t do well among typical critics (we didn’t much care for it), it has clearly been a smash hit with its target demographic. Younger audiences are loving it.
It’s at the point where people who don’t like the movie are recommending people to go see it for the experience of being in the audience along, with zoomers screaming “Chicken jockey!” and clapping when big events happen in the movie.
Though it may have failed critically, the Minecraft movie may have done exactly what it needed to in order to be a hit with the people it was made for.
Theaters go crazy for Minecraft movie
There are dozens of clips out there of people going absolutely insane for the Minecraft movie, bringing their own cosplays, and repeating iconic lines from the film. If there are enough people in a theater saying a line on queue, that means they’ve more than likely already seen the movie. This film has repeat customers.
Even for those who don’t like the Minecraft movie, the experience of being in the audience is pure spectacle.
The Chicken Jockey scene in particular has already become a meme amongst fans, with people who haven’t even seen the movie yet knowing about the meme already.
If you’re someone who’s trying to go to a theater for a quiet, respectful viewing experience, then the Minecraft movie probably isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a good time, though? The sheer amount of clips that have gone viral showing what it’s like to be in the audience make it out to be an unforgettable experience.
The film made $58 million dollars domestically in the US, with it being projected to have an opening weekend anywhere from $135-150 million dollars by Deadline. It’s shaping up to be a smash hit so loud it can be heard even outside the theaters it’s playing in.
It’ll need to make around $375 million to break even, and it’s well on track to do so.
So, while the Minecraft movie may not be “good” from the standpoint of a critical eye, audiences are enjoying it so much that they don’t even care. Perhaps this is what the creators of this film intended all along.
