The Last of Us games reveal exactly why Abby wants to kill Joel

Abby is angry in The Last of Us Season 2, and in the first episode, she vows to kill Joel “slowly” whenever she finds him – but why?

Cast your mind back to the events of the Season 1 finale. Joel and Ellie arrived at the Fireflies hospital in Salt Lake City, where Marlene dropped a bomb: the procedure to create a vaccine for the Cordyceps pandemic from Ellie’s immunity would be fatal.

Joel couldn’t accept it, so he murdered almost everyone in the hospital, including the surgeon who would have performed the operation and Marlene, before fleeing with Ellie to Jackson.

In the opening scene of The Last of Us Season 2, it’s clear that Abby wants revenge, but it’s not revealed who she lost or why she’s so much madder than everyone else.

Why Abby wants to kill Joel in The Last of Us

If the show follows the games, Abby wants to kill Joel because he killed her dad – who was also the doctor in the hospital.

In the first episode of Season 2, we see Abby, Owen, and the rest of her group standing near the graves of those Joel killed in Season 1. Abby clearly lost someone important to her, as she initially refuses to join another group (like Isaac and the WLF) until they find Joel.

“None of this is f**king fair,” Abby tells everyone, before hanging a Firefly pendant on one of the crosses. “Slowly… when we kill him, we kill him slowly,” she vows.

Jerry Anderson and Abby in The Last of Us Part 2

In Part 2, Abby’s dad is called Jerry, and he was the lead doctor among the Fireflies trying to create a cure for the Cordyceps infection.

In the game, he’s the one who breaks the news to Marlene that Ellie would need to die to make the cure, and while he believes it’s a worthwhile sacrifice, Abby still comforts him. Of course, it was all for nothing, because Joel shot Jerry in the head.

Speaking to TV Line, Kaitlyn Dever (who plays Abby in the show) teased: “Grief and losing someone close to you is such an all-consuming, overwhelming feeling. I don’t know about her values, necessarily, but I can understand when you’re left with nothing… what do you do with that and how does it manifest itself?

“With her, she wants revenge and she thinks revenge is the only way she’ll feel better.”
