The best wedding gifts for couples who already live together, from under $50 to over $500

Wedding season is in full bloom, which means that once you’ve figured out your wedding guest dress or your mother-of-the-bride outfit, it’s time to pivot to thinking about what the heck type of wedding gift to get for the couple who says they don’t want anything.

These days, it’s not uncommon for older couples to live together for several years before tying the knot. Traditional registry gifts likes dishware, cookware and small kitchen appliances might not be so useful for the couple who’ve already stocked their home and kitchen with all the accessories and gadgets they could possibly need. Which begs the question: What wedding gift do you buy for couples who already lived together?

We surveyed a handful of married couples and newlyweds about the gifts from their registry they actually still use, as well as the gifts they wish they’d registered for in hindsight. Their overwhelming suggestion for the best wedding gifts for couples? Cold hard cash. Cash is always the right size and color, after all.

But if you are in the market to get the couple a physical gift, most couples would say that they prefer upscale practical items that they might not splash out on for themselves, like fancier kitchen equipment from trusted brands, luxury sheets, nice bath towels and more.

Of course if they have a registry, as a best practice we recommend you stick to those items on their registry. But if you’re looking for general ideas or something to get the couple who doesn’t have a registry at all, you can’t go wrong with any of our 25 solid picks below, all ranging in price from under $50 to over $500.

I highly recommend these “super plush” robes from Brooklinen that are made with 100% Turkish cotton and feature deep pockets, cuffed edges and a piped collar. Best of all, it keeps its fluffy feel even after dozens of washes.

Made with Viscose from bamboo, Oprah added these sheets to her “Favorite Things” list in 2018 and dubbed them to be “the softest ever and may help regulate body temperature, meaning both chilly sleepers and hot flashers can get a good night’s rest.”

We think she’s on to something. Natural fibers like cotton and bamboo are often more breathable than synthetic materials like microfiber and polyester, which is why a good set of fancy sheets is one gift you know the couple will use for years.

If there’s one thing you know about parenting, it’s that new moms are probably running on less sleep than ever before. While it might be tempting make jokes about all of that sleep deprivation, the Breville Bambino Plus espresso machine might actually help her conquer it. Family and friends know that I’ve long been a fan of Breville’s smallest espresso machine, the Bambino, due to its ability to pull a quality espresso shot in a compact size without sacrificing taste. Not only is it easy to use, but it includes single and double-shot features. There’s even an automatic steam wand for milk texturing. Pair it with some cute espresso cups, and you’ve got a gift she’ll use for a very, very long time.
