Now That’s A Nifty New Feature
Hackaday spotted that ASUS added a gyroscope to their ROG Astral RTX 5090, specifically a Bosch Sensortec BMI323 sensor capable of acting as one. It was added to detect card sag and will send you an alert when a specific angle is reached. This is a great idea for more GPU manufacturers to consider, as a slight sag is just fine but as the angle increases you might start to see strange behaviour from your system. It should also let you know long before the card starts to pull either itself out of the PCIe slot or tears the PCIe slot from the motherboard.
The ROG Astral RTX 5090 weighs in at just over 3kg, or 6.7lbs if you prefer, which is around 1.2kg (~2.7lbs) heavier than the Founders Edition RTX 5090. At that weight you are going to want an anti-sag bracket you can trust, or perhaps a small car jack supporting the card. The addition of a gyroscope sensor isn’t where the extra weight comes from, so it makes sense to add. Here’s hoping that if other manufacturers start producing GPUs of similar weights, that they will also include this type of sensor.
