The AMD X870 Motherboards Have Arrived
It’s A B650E With USB 4, For You
You can be disappointed with the arrival of AMD’s X870 motherboards, in that they are essentially B650E boards with USB 4 Type-C and PCIe M.2 ports added on, or you could be glad that AMD stuck with a solid chipset that they have plenty of experience with. For many, the added cost of the X870 means it isn’t a great upgrade path unless you have need for that extra speed. In most cases you will not see any real world difference between a PCIe 4.0 SSD and running on PCIe 5.0; the USB speeds might make a difference though.
To start out, The FPS Review posted a number of reviews, including the GIGABYTE X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7. If your system predates the B650E series, this board is a solid choice for a new build. There are three PCIe 5.0 M.2 ports, though using the third will reduce the PCIe slot intended for your GPU to 8x from 16x, and there is a fourth PCIe 4.0 M.2 which comes from the actual chipset. These are clearly labelled so make sure to carefully check out which one you are populating.
