Suits LA Episode 2 recap: Lester’s case hits a big snag

After the jam-packed pilot, Suits LA Episode 2 is a bit easier to keep up with – and there are major developments in Lester’s case, not to mention simmering tension between Rick and Erica.

Suits LA opened with a bang last week – literally, as it started with a flashback of an explosion. By the end of the first episode, battle lines were drawn: Stuart Lane tricked Ted Black into a merger that cut him out of his own firm and put his livelihood at stake, Erica became head of entertainment after Rick’s betrayal, and Ted decided to defend Lester in his murder trial.

It was a lot to take in, and that’s before we get to the craziest twist: Ted’s brother Eddie, who we saw throughout the pilot, is actually dead. That’s right, according to Ted, his father “let them” (whoever “them” is) kill him when he was a teenager, and Ted sees Eddie’s ghost around the house (it’s more like a memory that comforts him, but “ghost” is snappier).

Episode 2 has two main subplots: Lester’s murder allegations and Erica and Rick’s battle for Dylan Pryor.

Every development in Lester’s case in Suits LA Episode 2

Near the start of the episode, Ted catches Amanda walking out of the elevator onto his floor (past a new sign: Black & Associates, rather than Black Lane) and asks why she’s there. There’s some more flirty banter, and then Ted asks what she knows about “Old Man Hanrahan,” the prosecutor on Lester’s case. Amanda clearly isn’t convinced Lester isn’t guilty – but she also tells Ted off for joking that he could be.

Ted and Kevin meet with Lester, who explains what happened with Simon: they went to a premiere, they came home and took some ecstasy, they decided to play with guns, and Simon snapped and shot himself. He called 911, and when the police arrived, they arrested him straight away.

It’s a neat and tidy story, but Kevin isn’t convinced. Nevertheless, he promises to dig up whatever he can to help with Ted’s case.

Meanwhile, Ted meets the prosecutor on the case: Elizabeth Smith, a notoriously tough attorney. “I’m who they send when they have no chance, but they need a win anyway,” he says.

She offers him a plea deal (10 years in prison), but Ted says no. That may be a bad idea, since she has a list of people who’ll testify that his “love language is lying”, as well as an autopsy report inconsistent with suicide.

Later, Kevin finds Lester’s bank records – and it looks like he’s been stealing from Simon. Ted and Kevin have a brief fallout over the case (Kevin thinks he’s guilty, and this frustrates Ted), but they patch things up and confront Lester. He explains that Simon funnelled $500k out of their production, so he was taking it back bit by bit – and, to keep everything level, he under-charged the studio for his services as a reimbursement.

He swears he didn’t murder Simon, and Kevin finally looks convinced. At the end of the episode, things get complicated: Elizabeth turns up at Ted’s office and reveals that Lester’s wife was sleeping with Simon before his death. “We call it motive,” she says.

And if things weren’t bad already, Amanda has beef with Elizabeth. They face off as she walks out of Ted’s office, and Amanda tells her she was responsible for the death of Dante Jefferson, one of her past clients. “You killed him, just as much as if you shivved him yourself,” she says.

Elizabeth tells her to stay away from Lester’s case because it’s a “loser”, and Amanda says she’ll “come running” if Ted asks for her help.

Rick and Erica’s fight for Dylan Pryor

rick and Erica in Suits LA

Remember Dylan Pryor, the actress (played by Victoria Justice) in the first episode? Well, now that Erica is head of entertainment, she’s her responsibility.

At the start of the second episode, Ted talks to Erica about Dylan; specifically, her two upcoming movies, an indie and the launchpad of an action franchise. Erica doesn’t know who Dylan is, but she promises to manage her needs while he focuses on Lester’s trial.

In the next scene, Erica finds Leah fighting with the copy machine. She asks her what she knows about Dylan Pryor – lucky for her, Leah is a huge fan.

Meanwhile, Dylan phones Rick and ask why he’s no longer representing her. He explains that he’s moved firms but insists that Erica will take care of her. She has a problem that needs solved: she’s signed on to do the indie movie, but it conflicts with her Warner Bros project, and she’s not going to let a small film derail her career.

Erica and Leah meet with the writer (who’s Dylan’s friend) and the producer, Fred, who does not want to release Dylan from her six-month contract. However, the writer offers a compromise: she’ll be done in three months, plus an extra month of her contract for safety, so she can exit her deal two months early. He agrees, and it seems like the matter has been settled.

Except… it hasn’t. Leah makes a mistake in the paperwork: she reveals that Dylan already has a role booked with Warner Bros, despite her indie contract prohibiting it. “For future reference, the writer is never the one calling the shots, the guy with the money is,” Erica tells her.

Rick appears at her door, and he manages to goad her into a one-on-one fight for Dylan (in short, whoever gets her what she wants becomes her lawyer).

They take different approaches: Rick threatens to sue and tarnish his reputation, so Fred bumps up her scene-count to 40; Erica claims that Warner Bros has backed her to sue him into the ground and coordinates her promotional tour with the indie’s shooting schedule (which is allowed in the contract).

In the end, he bows to Erica, so Dylan decides to stay with her – until Rick goes back to Fred and negotiates a less hostile arrangement, allowing her to do both projects. It’s revealed (through not-so-subtle hints) that they slept together, but work got in the way. With Dylan as a client, Samantha agrees to make Rick head of entertainment.

Obviously, Ted isn’t happy about losing Dylan – but he wants Erica to keep fighting. “I’d rather you get baited into a fight than back down from one… you gotta learn from your mistakes,” he says.

Before the end of the episode, Erica admits to Leah that she’s not into movies or TV shows, but being an entertainment lawyer is the only way to “get a piece of the action” in Los Angeles. They strike a deal: Erica will help Leah be a better lawyer, Leah will teach Erica about the entertainment industry.

Everything that happens in 2010 with Ted

Samantha in Suits LA

Suits LA Episode 2 has more flashbacks to Ted’s past; specifically the aftermath of Billy’s death in 2010.

In the first flashback, Ted goes to a show for one of Samantha’s clients: Cameron Logsdon, playing himself (and doing some incredible impressions of Mark Wahlberg and Christopher Walken). He makes a few jokes about Ted’s appearance (mind you, he did survive a bomb!), and it rubs him the wrong way.

It doesn’t cause any serious drama, but before Ted can relax with Samantha, he has an idea. He orders an FBI raid on a local gangster’s den and arrests Jimmy, a known hitman for a mob boss. He thinks he has nothing to worry about because Billy is dead, but Ted uses Cameron to do an impersonation of him to fool Jimmy into thinking he’s still alive.

It works, and Jimmy tells his attorney to leave so he can work with Ted. We know he’ll be put in protective custody, but it’s unclear what he needs to do in return.

Later, Samantha confronts Ted about using her client. She goes hard on him, telling him he’s just like his dad because he still uses people for his benefit. He apologises, and everything seems okay again.

Harvey Specter mention!

In an incredibly brief scene, Ted and Kevin talk about Harvey Specter (the hot-shot lawyer from the original Suits, if you didn’t know – but then again, why would you be watching Suits LA if you didn’t?).

“I never liked him… he was the only person I knew cockier than you,” Kevin says, and Ted replies: “That’s exactly why I liked him.”

It’s unclear exactly when Harvey will arrive in LA… but he’s coming, and hopefully it’ll be soon.
