Squid Game Season 3 introduced a series of new deadly games, but there’s one that stands out to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and not for the reason you might think.
The ending of the Netflix series was as beautiful as it was devastating. A couple of characters made it out unscathed, including Front Man, but Seong Gi-hun was not one of them, choosing to sacrifice himself to save Player 222’s baby.
Dong-hyuk considered letting Gi-hun live, but he chose to stick to his guns to drive home a message on the importance of sacrifice and making the world a better place for future generations.
In his defense, he did warn us that Squid Game Season 3 would be more brutal, more violent, and darker… but he also said it would be funnier.
Squid Game creator says Jump Rope is show’s funniest game
This comment was questioned in a new interview with Good Morning America, with Dong-hyuk pointing out that there were funny elements throughout Season 3. And he even thinks Jump Rope is the funniest game of the entire show.
If you remember, the game sees the Red Light, Green Light doll and her “boyfriend” swinging a giant mechanical jump rope. The players have to make it to the other side of a bridge without plummeting to their deaths.
Sounds simple, right? Well, not only is there a giant gap in the bridge that they have to jump over, but there’s nothing in the rules to say players can’t sabotage each other. Of course they did, leaving a whole line of contestants jumping on the spot to avoid getting pushed.
It might be hard to see the funny side when so many characters die in brutal ways (including Player 222), but Dong-hyuk explained, “These moments are meant to be funny. And so through these moments, I want Squid Game to be just a complete roller coaster with the highest highs and the lowest lows.”
“You’ll find funny moments in every single game,” he added. You’ve just got to know where to look.
As for whether he would return to continue the show, Dong-hyuk has been pretty clear about the fact that Season 3 is the last chapter of the flagship Netflix series (in fact, he wanted to finish with Season 1 but returned due to fan demand).
However, when asked if he’d consider creating Squid Game Season 4 or a spinoff himself down the line, he replied, “There’s a saying, ‘Never say never.’ Yeah, I never close the door… we will see. It’s still up in the air.”
So you’re saying there’s a chance.
In the meantime, Squid Game USA is rumored to be in the works with David Fincher at the helm, and Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 is dropping later this year, with a Season 3 now confirmed.
