Squid Game creator reveals secret meaning behind the show’s shapes

Circle, triangle, and square: these three shapes are intrinsic to the world of Squid Game, both in aesthetics, how it’s governed, and why the creator wrote the show in the first place.
They appear everywhere in Squid Game: they’re on the Dalgona cookies, the back of the cards given to players by the Salesman, on the guards’ masks, and they’re the shapes used to play the titular game in a playground.
This is where Hwang Dong-hyuk started. “ Those are actually the shapes that first came to mind when I first conceived the idea… because I was quite literally thinking of myself as a kid… and the circle, triangle, square is exactly what you [draw] on the ground,” he explained during a press conference Dexerto attended.
From here, Hwang began piecing together Netflix’s biggest show of all time. Before Season 3 drops, he explained the true meaning of the shapes.
Squid Game creator says shapes represent “limitless competition”
“ These three shapes have come to represent the limitless competition in late capitalism,” Hwang said.
“It’s used in our show to show the different classes among the master guards. I just think that these simple and fundamental geometric shapes… came to symbolize our show, as well as some of the issues that we face in current society.
So… it does feel quite odd, but I’m just really drawn to it. In the beginning, when I first thought of those shapes, I thought it was quite a peculiar discovery that I had made. So I’m quite fond of it.”
Season 3, which will close the flagship show (multiple spinoffs are rumored to be in the works, including an American version directed by David Fincher), is expected to be the most brutal installment yet.
Big questions remain: will Gi-hun make it out alive, can the Front Man be redeemed, and will Hwang Jun-ho come face to face with his brother again?
“When I was writing Season 3, I had to make a big decision… because it’s a finale for the whole series,” Hwang said.
“That decision was so difficult to make. I’m still thinking whether it’s good or not… but the viewers will see, I cannot spoil it.”
He was also asked to describe the finale in three words: “Crazy… insane… nuts!”
Squid Game Season 3 drops on Netflix on June 27, 2025. Until then, check out our predictions for who will die, the alleged true story behind Squid Game, and the new TV shows coming to streaming this month.
