Sparg0 stuns Smash Ultimate community by using low-tier Piranha Plant to win tournament

FaZe Sparg0 continues his rise as one of the greatest Smash players in history, this time by beating both MkLeo and Sonix with Piranha Plant to win Blink Respawn 2025.

Blink Respawn concluded in the Dominican Republic on July 20 and featured an elite final four consisting of Sparg0, the world’s best Sonic in Sonix, the top Pikachu Shinymark, and the Goat himself MkLeo.

Sparg0 has been known to whip out a few different characters. While he is primarily a Cloud main, he has Ageis, Corrin, and Roy up his sleeve, especially when it comes to certain matchups.

One fighter he’s been getting increasingly good at is Piranha Plant, one of Smash Ultimate’s less established characters. Well, the legend of Sparg0 added another chapter, because he was able to best some of the world’s best players with the low-tier.

During the event, Sparg0 whipped out his Cloud to 3-0 Fox player Twinknight in Top 64. He followed this up by going Plant in Top 32 against Sonic player Bluthunder, before choosing Ageis and Corrin against YourBro’s Kazuya.

In top 8, the FaZe legend went all Piranha Plant, besting MkLeo in a 3-2 set before downing longtime rival Sonix in straight sets 3-1 and later 3-2 to win the whole tournament.

The Plant pick threw his rival and seemingly everyone else for a loop.

“Can someone give me a rundown on how to beat Piranha Plant?” Sonix asked following his defeat in Winners Finals. “First time playing that mu in bracket idk what the f**k was going on.”

Sonix wasn’t the only one in shock. Sparg0 himself even proclaimed that he had no idea how far he could push the game’s first DLC fighter.

“Still in a bit of shock because I would’ve never imagined I could take Plant to this level, but competing while playing the character you like the most, regardless of tiers, truly does wonders,” he said. “Excited to see how much farther I can go with Plant!”

We’ll have to see how often Sparg0 decides to bring the Plant out, especially with Cloud being the fighter that made him one of Smash’s top stars, but it just goes to show how skilled the Mexican prodigy is to capture glory with a character believed to be near the bottom of the game’s tier list.
