Sony FX8 Full-Frame 12K Cinema Camera Expected Ahead of IBC 2025

As the IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) in Amsterdam draws near, all eyes are on Sony and its upcoming announcements, which promise to shake up the professional video landscape once again. According to early reports, Sony is preparing to unveil two major camera systems: the PXW-Z380 camcorder and the groundbreaking full-frame 12K FX8.

The most headline-grabbing reveal is the Sony FX8, a next-generation full-frame cinema camera that is expected to deliver an astonishing 12K resolution. Designed to push image quality beyond the current industry standard, the FX8 features a 3:2 aspect ratio full-frame CMOS sensor capable of capturing 96 million total pixels. While the FX8 lacks internal RAW or X-OCN recording, it can output 16-bit RAW at up to 120fps via SDI—though only in a 3.8K cropped full-frame mode—similar to the FX6.

Internally, the FX8 records in XAVC format, supporting up to 8K at 30p and 4K at 60p in both full-frame and Super 35 modes. For high-speed work, the 3.8K crop mode enables 4K recording at 120fps. Although its sensor readout isn’t as fast as Blackmagic’s URSA Cine 12K, the FX8 appears to strike a solid balance between resolution, flexibility, and usability—catering to professional filmmakers looking for ultra-high-res video in a Sony-native workflow.

Alongside the FX8, Sony will also introduce the PXW-Z380, a powerful 3CMOS XDCAM camcorder that builds on the legacy of the Z280. The Z380 brings notable advancements in image quality thanks to its BIONZ XR processor, integrated AI unit, and high-performance Exmor RS sensors. With support for 4K120p in all-RGB tricolor recording, improved autofocus, and variable internal ND filters, the Z380 is positioned as a top-tier solution for ENG and documentary filmmakers.

Meanwhile, Canon is also expected to join the IBC action with at least one new Cinema EOS camera. However, details on Canon’s plans remain scarce, as Cinema EOS development tends to operate separately from the more frequently leaked EOS R line.

With the FX8 aiming to redefine full-frame cinema capture and the Z380 pushing the limits of 3CMOS camcorders, Sony appears ready to dominate IBC 2025 with tools built for the future of high-end digital filmmaking.
