Sigourney Weaver makes ‘embarrassing’ Mandalorian and Grogu confession

Everyone’s favorite final girl, Sigourney Weaver, is making her Star Wars debut in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie – but despite her experience in sci-fi, she had to make a rather ‘embarrassing’ confession before getting started.

While Disney’s space opera franchise has placed much of its attention on developing its TV universe, a new era is about to kick in with an exciting roster of new movies, including Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter.

But up first is Jon Favreau’s movie, which will continue the story after The Mandalorian Season 3. No prizes for guessing Pedro Pascal will reprise his role as Din Djarin, who’ll be joined by his adorable sidekick.

They’ll be meeting some starry newcomers along the way, including Alien icon Sigourney Weaver, who took to the Live Stage with Favreau at the 2025 Star Wars Celebration to share more about The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Sigourney Weaver’s The Mandalorian & Grogu confession

Weaver opened up about the moment she was contacted by Favreau to take on a role in the upcoming Star Wars movie – and she had to admit that she’d never even watched The Mandalorian.

“When Jon, out of the blue, asked to Zoom with me and then starts talking about The Mandalorian and Grogu, I think we’re both a little shy,” she explained. “I’m embarrassed to say I hadn’t watched the show.”

However, the Avatar star was quick to point out, “If I’d known what it was I would’ve watched it but, you know, he said, ‘Just, start watching it,’ and I just fell in love with it. How could you not?

“With both characters, and the world, and all the other supporting worlds, it was just very inspiring and really cool. So the next Zoom we had I knew a little more, and [it was] irresistible, are you kidding me? I’m so grateful to Jon for even thinking of me.”

Even though she hadn’t seen The Mandalorian before being asked to join the cast, Weaver said she’s always “admired the Star Wars films.”

“I love being taken to another world where you can see things play out that are really important but they are about another world, not your world,” she added.

“I think everyone needs that escape and that’s why I’ve consistently gone back to science fiction. I just feel it’s about the future, it’s about being human, it’s an exploration of so many things, it’s just endless.”

If that weren’t exciting enough, the actress shared some details about her character. “She’s a fighter pilot… She came up in the Rebellion,” she said.

“And now she’s trying to protect the New Republic and I believe is completely committed to what she does, has had the good sense to hire Mandalorian and this sidekick, and I’m gonna find out if they’re as good as they say. I’m counting on it.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to drop in cinemas on May 22, 2026. Until then, check out our breakdown of the Star Wars timeline, our ranking of the best Star Wars characters, and read everything we know about Lando.
