Samsung co-CEO and head of mobile devices division dies

Han Jong-hee, co-CEO of Samsung Electronics and head of the consumer electronics and mobile devices division, passed away from a heart attack at the age of 63.

The newly appointed boss, Jun Young-hyun, remains solely in charge of the Korean tech giant amid uncertainties in the chip business.

Han passed away at a hospital on Tuesday while being treated for cardiac arrest, a company spokesperson told Reuters. A co-CEO has not been appointed yet, but someone is expected to fill his role, as Samsung traditionally has two top executives overseeing the consumer and chip divisions.

Jun was appointed co-CEO after the annual shareholders meeting just last week. He was promoted from his position leading the semiconductor division, which has been struggling against competitors like fellow Korean SK Hynix and TSMC.

Han Jong-hee was part of Samsung Electronics for over 40 years and played a key role in establishing Samsung TV’s business as influential on a global scale. His absence could impact Samsung’s business strategy, particularly in marketing, as well as the performance of its home appliances division.
