Police searching for ‘Scooby-Doo’ after store robbery mystery

Police in Alabama are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect who broke into a convenience store while dressed as Scooby-Doo.

The bizarre, viral burglary took place at the Quick Stop on Highway 82 around 3:45 AM on June 22, when officers responded to a triggered alarm.

Surveillance footage shows a man in a full Scooby-Doo costume and balaclava entering the store and stuffing cash and coins into a duffle bag.

Scooby-Doo wanted after real-life mystery

While the iconic cartoon dog is usually solving mysteries, this time he is the mystery.

“Hey gang! We need your help solving a mystery. This individual in a Scooby-Doo suit broke into the Quick Stop on Highway 82 in Duncanville,” the Tuscaloosa Police Department said in a statement on Facebook, along with photos of the suspect.

“Officers responded to the store after the security alarm activated at 3:45 AM Sunday. The suspect took cash and coins, but no snacks. He appears to be a white male, around 5’9.”

Police need the public’s help to solve this mystery.

Later, they shared an image of the Mystery Machine, writing, “We’ve questioned the owners of the vehicle, but no solid leads yet. Continue to be on the lookout for shady caretakers and don’t meddle if you see the suspect.”

The suspect remains at large, but the city seems to be having fun with the viral crime. 953 BEAR’s Steve & DC even offered Panama City Beach vacation to the first person who showed up wearing a Scooby Doo costume. The vacation was won by an 8-year-old boy.

This isn’t the first time a costumed thief has gone viral in 2025. Back in March, a man dressed as Spider-Man was arrested after stealing over $10,000 worth of Pokemon and Dragon Ball cards from a Virginia collectibles shop.

In another incident from 2023, a street fight between Mario, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and others went viral on social media after a dispute between costumed employees at a tourist attraction in Brazil.

Anyone with information on the Scooby-Doo bandit is urged to contact the Tuscaloosa Police.
