Pokemon is the most profitable media franchise of all time, with its games, movies, and merchandise making an inconceivable amount of money over the years. However, when it comes to Pokemon TCG Pocket, it’s not quite the king of the gacha market.
There are two games that have beaten TCG Pocket’s revenue in June, and the first isn’t all that surprising: Genshin Impact. Even after years of being on the market, Genshin is still the king of gacha and consistently charts near the top of earnings every month. For June, it’s got that top spot.
However, there’s another game that has come along to bump Pokemon TCG Pocket off the throne it had in May: Love and Deepspace. It’s a game about “taming” hot, muscular, and, at some point in the storyline that people often pay to access, shirtless guys.
While the gacha market is dominated mainly by games that star women and highlight female protagonists, Love and Deepspace is showing that there’s a market for those who prefer dudes, too.
Love and Deepspace topples Pokemon TCG Pocket’s revenue
Unlike many other gacha games that have some light romance elements and focus mainly on gameplay, Love and Deepspace outright markets itself as an immersive dating sim.
And, while it has 3D action game combat that’s somewhat in line with its contemporaries like Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact, the real draw is that you fight alongside your man at all times and play exclusively as a female protagonist.
Though it may not be the most popular gacha game in the world or have the most recognizable name in comparison to other massive titles like NIKKE, Hoyo games, or Granblue Fantasy, it’s a massive hit with its target audience and raked in over $56 million dollars in the month of June. And that’s actually less than it made in May.
Stats here are from GachaRevenue, an aggregate source that only factors in mobile sales and doesn’t have ways to reliably get data from Chinese markets. However, that makes Love and Deepspace an even bigger winner: Not only is it hugely popular in Chinese markets, it also has a PC client that’s an additional source of revenue.
As a result, it more than likely has a big lead on Pokemon TCG Pocket despite being a game that much less people have heard of outside the gacha game sphere.
And, though the industry is still dominated by titles tailor made for the male gaze, there may be a huge market on the other side of the isle that devs just aren’t taking advantage of yet.
