The next Overwatch 2 hero is set to arrive with Season 18, but the character’s free trial period has the community baffled.
Ever since Mauga, Overwatch has allowed players to test out upcoming heroes a bit earlier and use their feedback to make adjustments before their full launch.
These trial periods are typically quite a few weeks before the hero debuts alongside the new season, but in the case of Wuyang, the devs are raising quite a few eyebrows.
In a July 22 blog post, the OW team announced that the 44th hero would have his free trial from August 14–18, extremely close to Season 18’s launch.

Currently, not much is known about Wuyang except that he will be a Chinese support hero.
The devs revealed a bit more in the blog post, highlighting that his damage output would make this hero stand out a bit more from prior support heroes.
“This rebellious Support Hero from Wuxing University’s Water College is all about rhythm, disruption, and flow-based control,” they said. “His fluid healing, hybrid damage utility, and graceful mobility make for Support done differently. Expect a learning curve with some serious splash potential.”
However, his hero trial period of August 14-18 has ruffled some feathers, especially as that’s when Season 17 is about to end.
“A week before the season makes NO sense to me… won’t it just spoil his actual release?” one person commented.
“ofc they make it the end of season instead of mid season like they usually do. What is the point if there’s only a week to receive feedback?” another asked.
“Wtf is the point of having the trial like a week before his release lmfao guess I’m not logging on for another month,” someone else chimed in.
It’s not clear exactly why the devs opted to make the trial period so close to Season 18 or if they’ll be able to make the necessary adjustments in time for the support’s proper release, but for now, players have way more questions than answers.
We’ll have to see how Wuyang is and if he really is as much of a unique hero as the OW2 devs have made him out to be once August 14 rolls around.
