Overwatch 2 drops new dating sim but there’s a huge catch

Overwatch 2 is finally letting players romance even more characters in its Loverwatch dating sim, but not everyone can play it.

Remember Loverwatch? In 2023, Blizzard surprised the Overwatch 2 community by dropping a dating sim game, allowing players to date Genji or Mercy. There was even a secret ending, too, where you could encounter Cupid Hanzo to unlock a highlight intro reward.

This limited-time game, which could be played via a web browser, received many positive reactions from players who looked forward to more. 

Though, two years on, we haven’t heard another mention of the spinoff mode, not even on Valentine’s Day this year. In a surprising turn of events, however, a new Loverwatch iteration has just been revealed. This time, they’re also adding new characters to the mix—but there’s a catch. It can only be played in China.

There’s a new Loverwatch game with even more characters

As seen in a post on X, the new Loverwatch dating sim features even more characters to romance, some of whom were introduced in Overwatch 2, including Lifeweaver, D.Va, Mauga, Juno, Junker Queen, Cassidy, and Genji.

In the key art and trailer, we can see these characters getting all dressed up, giving them a fresh look outside of their regular outfits in-game.

However, not all fans can enjoy the game mode given it’s exclusive to the Chinese servers. And by the looks of it, trying to access this game outside of China won’t be a walk in the park.

According to a social media user, you must verify your identity by providing an ID and phone number to play this game on the Chinese server.

After two years of absence due to an expired licensing agreement, Overwatch 2 finally returned to China on February 19, 2025. As compensation, it offered a plethora of events and free rewards to players.

It’s unknown whether or not this version of Loverwatch is another thank you to the Chinese community, or if it may arrive for all the other servers soon. We can only hope this is the case for next year’s Valentine’s Day.
