Overwatch 2 Director reveals Blizzard hasn’t given up on a TV series

Overwatch 2 Director Aaron Keller says he’d “love” for the game to finally spawn a TV series along with the return of the beloved animated shorts.
In the lead-up to the launch of the first Overwatch, Blizzard released a ton of animated shorts to introduce new heroes and build up hype for the hero shooter.
In the years following the game’s release, the animated shorts became less common, despite being widely celebrated among the community.
Although Overwatch 2 has had some shorts of its own, they’re not released nearly as often as they once were and Aaron Keller is looking to change that, along with finally getting an Overwatch series off the ground – something fans have waited years for.
Overwatch 2 could finally get a TV series
Speaking with Twitch streamer Jay3, Keller discussed a desire to return to Overwatch 2’s story after the company decided to pull the plug on PvE content due to poor sales.
When asked about the possibility of a TV series, Keller said the team would “love to do that.”

“Even more than just a TV series, one of the things we see or hear our players talk about is Overwatch has dropped the ball when it comes to story and lore.”
Although Overwatch has improved drastically as a game since PvE’s cancellation by bringing in Perks and highly-requested features such as Hero bans and map voting, Keller believes they’re still not at max potential.
When the topic of Shorts came up, Keller expressed a desire to bring them back and really enhance the game’s story more.
“For me, personally, for us to say that Overwatch 2 is firing on all cylinders, we need to have some of those [shorts] come back,” he said.
An Overwatch 2 TV series has been a long time coming and fans were reportedly very close to getting one. According to journalist Jason Schreier, an Overwatch TV series was in the cards along with ones for Warcraft and Diablo, but that was canned after Blizzard sued Netflix for poaching CFO Spencer Neumann away from the company.
Netflix has notably had success with its animated versions of popular games with Arcane, Castlevania and Cyberpunk Edgerunners being massive hits.
We’ll have to see what the future holds, but it’s clear that the devs have big plans for continuing Overwatch 2’s story through alternative mediums despite the actual story content for the game getting canned.
