Overwatch 2 devs respond as game leavers ruin Stadium mode

The Overwatch 2 devs have responded to concerns with the new Stadium mode and leavers ruining matches.
Season 16 of Overwatch 2 launched with one of the game’s biggest new modes in the form of Stadium.
This new mode best of 7 Competitive mode, which has fewer heroes than the standard game, lets players purchase buffs for their characters while competing in revamped maps designed just for it.
Stadium gives users a completely new way to play Overwatch and while it’s been well-received, there is a big issue that has been plaguing matches: leavers.
Overwatch 2 devs not worried about Stadium’s big leaver problem
Since the mode’s launch, countless threads have popped up across Reddit and the official forums with players complaining about how many leavers their games have.
Posts such as “What’s with all of the leavers in Stadium?”, “Leavers in Stadium are ruining matches”, and “Leavers are a major problem in Stadium” has been commonplace.
While single Stadium matches are shorter than individual games, because they’re Best of 7, they can take a bit longer, which could be contributing to the abnormal leaver rates.
On May 9, Game Director Aaron Keller revealed that the leaver rate was higher than they had believed.
“Initially we reported a 7% leaver rate, but after some tweaks in how we collected data, we are seeing that leaver rate is closer to 12% (on PC),” he said.
“This seems to be largely coming from first-time players, with leaver rates dropping the more matches one has under their belt. Since Stadium is still so new, we expect the leaver rate to drop and settle at a much lower rate in the coming weeks.”
It’ll be interesting to see if the leaver rate drops as expected or how the devs handle the situation if it continues to be a big problem.
For now though, OW2 players may want to consider waiting a bit before jumping into Stadium and see if the leaver rates settle before risking having their games become near unwinnable by playing with one less teammate.
