The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered dropped suddenly on all platforms on April 22, and players on Steam have already praised it as one of the best reimaginings of a beloved game ever.
Despite there being no official announcement for weeks, Oblivion Remastered has been one of the most talked-about games of the year so far. Leak after leak made it one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry, with players desperately hoping for a shadowdrop.
Their wishes came true when Bethesda released the remake of the classic RPG at the end of the reveal stream, allowing fans on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC to return to Cyrodiil for the first time in nearly two decades.
After so many rumors and such a long wait, there was always the risk that the final product would be a letdown. However, the Steam reviews have been glowing in the hours since launch.
Oblivion Remastered met with rave reviews on Steam
At the time of writing, Oblivion Remastered reviews are marked as “very positive” on Steam, with the majority of players singing its praises. In fact, of the nearly 11,000 reviews that have been posted, less than 2,000 have been negative.
One of the most common themes throughout the user reviews has been how faithfully it upgrades the original game, making it more beautiful than ever but retaining what made it special to begin with.
“Golden standard for what a remaster should be,” said one player, before adding: More or less rebuilt from the ground up as if it’s a new game based on the standards we expect today, not just slapping some new textures on old assets and shipping it.”
“Absolutely amazing graphics and combat, feels like a whole new game to me,” agreed another satisfied player: “Haven’t smiled like this in 15 years.”
Of course, since the game has only just launched, there are some bugs that can’t be ignored. However, many players are happy to overlook them and even argue that it only adds to the nostalgia.
“Was riding a horse, tripped over a rock and flew into the sky…ahhh just how I like it,” joked one fan in another positive review, with others saying “it wouldn’t be a Bethesda game” without a few glitches and some jank.
Many of these issues will likely be smoothed out in post-launched updates, but you can expect some of the most notorious to stick around to ensure that Oblivion doesn’t lose its charm.
