Nintendo has confirmed the Switch 2 won’t have one of the new console’s most highly-requested features.
The Japanese game company gave fans a deeper look at the Switch 2 back on April 2 and has continued to release more details about the next-gen console in the weeks since.
Nvidia revealed more details about its performance, while Nintendo has continued to give consumers a closer look at launch titles like Mario Kart World.
One thing that fans have asked for since the launch of the original Switch is custom themes for the home screen, but the company didn’t have any good news to share about that.
Nintendo confirms Switch 2 doesn’t have custom themes
According to a report from Nintenderos, Nintendo has confirmed that only two themes will be available for the Switch 2’s home screen at launch: Light and Dark.
This shouldn’t be a surprise, however, as Nintendo hasn’t implied there could be anything different. This means the new console’s UI is going to remain extremely similar to the original Switch’s, making it easier for kids to transition over to the Switch 2.
Nintendo could also just add custom themes in a future software update after it launches in June, but we’ll have to wait to see what happens.
The Switch 2 releases to the public on June 5, 2025, and pre-orders for the console have gone live just about everywhere it will be available.
Both Japan and the United States have sold out of available units due to overwhelming interest in the next-gen console, meaning some people will have to wait until after it launches for a chance to find one in stock.
In May, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against accessory maker Genki for making its Switch 2 accessories available to see during CES 2025, an event that took place before the console was even revealed.
