Nikon has officially announced the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 lens, marking its first f/1.4 lens for the Z-mount mirrorless system. Historically, Nikon’s prime lenses for this system have been f/1.2, f/1.8, or f/2.8, making this new addition notable for its wider aperture.
The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4, providing users with the ability to create images with large, soft bokeh and three-dimensional rendering that makes subjects pop. This wide-angle 35mm focal length is versatile, suitable for capturing landscapes, snapshots, portraits, flowers, and pets. With a minimum focus distance of 0.27 meters, photographers can get close to subjects like food and flowers, emphasizing the main subject with significant background blur.
Despite its fast aperture, the lens is compact and lightweight, with a total length of approximately 86.5mm and a weight of around 415g. This design is comparable to the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, making it practical for everyday use and convenient for quick snapshots on the go. The lens features superior optical performance typical of NIKKOR Z lenses, delivering clear images with minimal chromatic aberrations. Interestingly, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is not part of Nikon’s premium ‘S’ line, yet it is priced lower than the 35mm f/1.8 S, debuting at a recommended price of $599 compared to the $849 of the f/1.8. This lens appears on Nikon’s roadmap but is not labeled as an ‘S’ line lens. Its construction includes eleven elements arranged in nine groups, with two aspherical elements, suggesting it is a unique design rather than a re-badged lens.
Autofocus is driven by a stepper motor, a common feature in Z-mount lenses, and it includes a customizable control ring. On full-frame cameras, it serves as a slight wide-angle lens, and on Nikon’s ‘DX’ APS-C cameras, it provides a 53mm equivalent field of view. The lens, weighing 415g (14.7oz) and measuring 75 x 87mm (3.0 x 3.4″), accepts 62mm filters and is expected to be available in mid-July at a price of $599.95.
