Nikon has announced the COOLPIX P1100, an upgraded version of its popular superzoom compact camera, the P1000. The P1100 keeps the impressive 125x optical zoom from its predecessor, covering a focal length range of 24-3000mm. With Dynamic Fine Zoom, it can reach up to 250x digital zoom, extending the focal length to 6000mm. This makes it perfect for capturing everything from close-ups of the moon to distant wildlife.

The COOLPIX P1100 features a 16MP backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and an f/2.8 lens, which helps take clear photos even in low light. It also uses Nikon’s Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction technology to reduce blurriness caused by camera shake, offering four stops of image stabilization. This is especially helpful when shooting handheld at long distances. The camera can record 4K UHD videos at 30 frames per second and includes a 3.5mm jack for connecting an external microphone to improve sound quality.
While the P1100 looks similar to the P1000, it comes with some useful upgrades. The most significant change is the addition of a USB-C port, which meets the latest EU regulations for electronic devices. This makes charging and transferring data faster and more efficient. The P1100 also includes updated wireless features like Bluetooth 5.1 and WPA3-SAE Wi-Fi, offering better security and faster connections.
Nikon has made the camera easier to use by adding new features. For example, you can now select the autofocus area in Bird-watching mode. Additionally, functions that were only available on the camera’s Fn button can now be assigned to the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons on the optional ML-L7 Bluetooth remote control. The P1100 also introduces new shooting modes, such as Fireworks Show Scene Mode and Long Exposure Noise Reduction, to help capture more creative shots.
However, not all the changes are improvements. The camera’s image stabilization rating has been reduced from 5.0 to 4.0 stops due to updates in CIPA’s testing standards, although the real-world performance remains the same. The built-in flash is slightly less powerful, with its guide number dropping from 16m to 12m.
Despite these minor downgrades, the P1100 is still an excellent choice for photography enthusiasts who need extreme zoom capabilities. It offers a level of versatility that smartphones can’t match, especially for long-distance photography.
The Nikon COOLPIX P1100 will be available in late February for $1099, which is $100 more than the P1000’s launch price in 2018. This price increase aligns with adjustments made over the P1000’s lifecycle. For anyone looking for powerful zoom and solid performance in a compact camera, the COOLPIX P1100 is a strong contender.
