Netflix has dropped the official trailer for K-Pop Demon Hunters, and while the anime is a far cry from Squid Game, the cast features an unexpected crossover with the hit Korean TV show.
In the world of streaming, Squid Game and K-Pop Demon Hunters couldn’t be more different.
One is a live-action dystopian thriller in which cash-strapped players compete in a series of deadly children’s games, while the other is an animated musical about a group of K-pop singers who moonlight as demon slayers.
However, they share one thing in common: they’re both Netflix titles. But that’s not all. Take a closer look at the voice cast list, and you’ll see a big name up front.
KPop Demon Hunters voice cast includes major Squid Game star
Lee Byung-hun – the actor who plays Squid Game’s Hwang In-ho, aka Front Man – is voicing Gwi-Ma in KPop Demon Hunters.
Byung-hun gives an impeccable performance in everything he’s in. Not only does he make for a formidable foe in Squid Game, but he’s showcased his acting chops in a range of big screen hits in the past, from A Bittersweet Life to I Saw the Devil.
In KPop Demon Hunters, he’ll be showcasing his singing abilities, with Netflix stating, “Original songs are performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI, Andrew Choi, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav, and Lea Salonga.”
Little is known about his character, although it’s already sparked theories. “I had a thought about a potential plot twist that would happen in the climax,” wrote one fan.
“Not only Jinu would be the villain for most of the entire runtime, but Gwi-Ma could be the twist antagonist in the film’s final battle. It would be weird if this happens…”
“I’m sad we didn’t get to hear him in the trailer,” said another, while a third agreed, “I was waiting to hear his voice in the trailer but they gave us nothing.”
Thankfully, there’s not long to wait, as Kpop Demon Hunters hits Netflix on June 20, 2025.
KPop Demon Hunter has a star-packed voice cast
There’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to the rest of the cast, with Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo voicing the leading girl group Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, respectively.
As well as her singing abilities, Cho is best known for playing Kira Yukimura in Teen Wolf and June in the Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
You may recognize Hong for her roles in High Maintenance, Hacks, and Tales of the City. Ji-young, meanwhile, has appeared in Expats, Moxie, and the recent Until Dawn movie.
Ahn Hyo-seop is another exciting addition to the cast, having made a name for himself in K-drama hits such as A Time Called You, Business Proposal, and Dr. Romantic 2 and 3.
In KPop Demon Hunters, he’s voicing Jinu, a member of the group’s rival boy band (who are secretly demons in disguise).
Then there’s Lost, Money Heist: Korea, and XO Kitty star Yunjin Kim as Celine, Community and The Hangover’s Ken Jeong as Bobby, and Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim as Healer Han.
Finally, Big Mouth’s Joel Kim Booster and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’s Liza Koshy take on roles as hosts in the new movie.
Speaking to Netflix about the cast, co-director and writer Chris Appelhans said, “We have an amazing voice cast, and the range of their performances is what gives the film such an original tone.
“Byung Hun Lee and Ahn Hyo-seop bring authentic K-drama emotion, while Arden, May, and Ji-young blend the charisma of legit K-pop stars with the vulnerability and comedy of real young women juggling a dual life like no other.”
