My Neighbor Totoro 512-Page Film Comic Omnibus Is Available Now For $27
If you’d like to read a Studio Ghibli film, the All-In-One Edition of My Neighbor Totoro’s Film Comic series is now available. Priced at $27 (was $30) at Amazon, this 584-page hardcover omnibus collects all six My Neighbor Totoro trade paperback comic books–some of which are difficult to find for remotely reasonable prices nowadays. Even if you managed to find all six through an official retailer at list price ($10 each), you’d still be spending more than double the cost of My Neighbor Totoro All-In-One Edition.
You can also preorder the hardcover omnibus versions of Kiki’s Delivery Service Film Comic, which releases October 22, and Spirited Away Film Comic, which is slated for January 28, 2025. Single volumes for these are even more difficult to find, especially Spirited Away, which released in theaters in 2001 and remains the highest grossing film in Studio Ghibli’s catalog. Spirited Away became the first Japanese anime to win Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards–and it remained the only Oscar winner in that category until Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron won earlier this year.
These graphic novels are notable because they use the original film animation cells for illustrations. They’ve all been rearranged and reformatted to look like comic book and manga panels, and the result is surprisingly effective. Spirited Away clocks in at a total of 864 pages, while My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service are 584 pages each. Hopefully Howl’s Moving Castle, which also has a Film Comics series, will receive the All-In-One treatment next.
For anyone who adores the art direction of Studio Ghibli movies, this is a pretty great way to “pause” a film so that you can focus on the smaller details of these beautifully animated stories. Because these comics use original cells and illustrations from the movies, they really can be viewed as reasonably priced art books, too. Recommended age ranges for readers vary between the books. My Neighbor Totoro is recommended for ages 8-11, while Kiki’s Delivery Service is 11-14. Spirited Away does not yet have a recommended age range on the listing, but the comics were written for kids ages nine and up when the series debuted in 2002.
Studio Ghibli movies are available to stream on Max, but if you want to own physical copies, the limited-edition Blu-ray versions with matching steelbook cases are definitely worth checking out. We’ve put together a list of the collectible editions of Ghibli films you can get for retail price or less at Amazon, including Spirited Away for $15, My Neighbor Totoro for $19, and Kiki’s Delivery Service for $23. The 30th Anniversary Edition of My Neighbor Totoro, which comes with the soundtrack on CD and a 40-page book, is available for $37.
In July, The Boy and the Heron became the first Studio Ghibli film to release on 4K Blu-ray. The steelbook version is discounted to $34 and comes with 4K and standard Blu-ray discs.
Studio Ghibli Films
Plenty of other Studio Ghibli books are available to add to your home library already, including traditional art books for Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Each of these films has been adapted into a picture book, too.
But arguably the most notable book deal at Amazon is Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga box set for $53 (was $80).
