Monster Hunter Wilds breaks Steam record almost no game has achieved

It’s no secret that Monster Hunter Wilds has been a breakout success. Judging by the Steam player counts, its already sold millions of copies. But it’s so successful that it’s beginning to take the throne from some of Steam’s most played games. Even Valve’s.

Aside from Wilds pulling in over four times World’s peak of 334k, its player count records reach far beyond the scope of just the Monster Hunter series.

With a launch day player count record of 1,384,608, Monster Hunter Wilds is starting to reach the very top of Steam. And sure, while it’s shot far past other big successes like Marvel Rivals and Cyberpunk 2077, it has now done something almost no game has ever done: Surpassing Valve.

Surpassing Counter-Strike’s all time peak is still out of reach, but they have beaten Valve’s other free-to-play giant DOTA 2. This is something only 5 other games on Steam have done.

Monster Hunter Wilds passes one of Valve’s biggest games

DOTA 2 is still one of the biggest competitive games in the world, boasting some of the biggest prize pools in esports and a dedicated scene that, while large, mostly sticks to themselves.

It’s not likely that it’ll ever beat its own record of 1,295,114, making it a benchmark for what it means to truly enter the Steam hall of fame. And Monster Hunter Wilds is there.

Monster Hunter Wilds is now the fifth most played game of all time on Steam according to Steamdb, beating out DOTA 2 and Lost Ark, with the latter being a free-to-play game.

At the time of writing, it’s also the second most concurrently played game on Steam, just behind Counter-Strike 2. CS2 is tough to beat considering it’s Valve’s crown jewel at the moment and one of the biggest competitive games in the world.

However, this massive milestone is a testament to just how successful Wilds’ launch has been, especially considering that it’s available on consoles. Though user data for consoles isn’t publicly available like Steam, this makes it very likely that MHW’s overall peak beat Counter-Strike 2’s on the day it released.
