Minecraft movie is already getting a sequel after crushing box office

The Minecraft movie has already made over $430 million dollars in the box office at the time of writing, and it’s still a phenomenon in theaters that has people going out to droves to go see it – and then go see it again. It should come as no surprise that there’s already a sequel planned.

A big part of the Minecraft movie’s appeal is the theater experience of going to see it. Depending on which showing you go to, the audience is howling at the film, laughing and cheering along. This is why, despite scathing critic reviews, the movie has done so well.

This does be the question, however, of whether or not Warner Bros. can replicate this success in a second go around. But it seems we’ll know the answer to that soon enough.

In an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy both confirmed that they’re already setting things in motion to have a sequel made.

A Minecraft movie sequel is already planned

Though the film isn’t in production just yet, both the Warner Bros. leads are dead set on making it and capitalizing on the hype.

“Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently,” De Luca said when asked about a possible deal by Deadline. For them, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.

It is, however, worth mentioning that this sequel may take a while depending on how long it takes to re-negotiate their rights to the film. When the Minecraft movie was originally in production, part of the motivation to make it was that they were about to lose their right to make it.

“The rights were about to lapse, we learned in one of our first meetings with producer Roy Lee,” Abdy explained. “He talked to us about Minecraft, we dove into it, we read it. We got excited by it and recognized what Jesse Ehrman had been trying to do for years alongside Legendary. And then we all made the film.”

So, even if they’re already planning a sequel, it’s hard to say just how long it’ll take to make it, let alone secure the rights to do it all again.

Additionally, it’s hard to say whether or not this film is lightning in a bottle. The Chicken Jockey meme has become so sensational that some theaters have had to make warnings for viewers ahead of time to make sure they don’t toss popcorn everywhere.

Is this something that they can do again, though? Is there another Chicken Jockey moment to be had? Who knows? It’s hard to say.

What is certain though is that the Minecraft movie has been an unexpected hit, and that its impact, both positive and negative, has made a lasting impact on theater culture. It may kick off a new trend in what people expect when they pay to go to a theater.
