Mindseye hit shelves, but its debut was no blockbuster. Gamers braced for impact, and the signs were all there.
Mindseye, developed by Build A Rocket Boy and led by ex-Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies, built significant anticipation. A 2022 tease kicked off the hype.
As May 2025 approached, negative feedback started surfacing. Social media quickly dubbed Mindseye “a broken mess, filled with bugs.” Just a week before launch, the company saw high-level exits as both its legal officer and CFO departed. The timing of these resignations, so close to release, set off alarm bells.
Further fueling skepticism, no major gaming outlets received review codes. This lack of transparency meant players had no critical assessments to rely on.
Mindseye’s rocky launch confirms everyone’s fears
Mindseye launched on June 10, and indeed, those red flags were pointing to real issues. The game debuted as a complete technical “disaster.”
Players immediately reported a slew of problems, including being locked 30 FPS across all consoles, suffering from constant stuttering, and frequent crashes. Plus, there were terrifying face bugs and ragdolls that broke immersion.
Most alarmingly, reports surfaced that the game was potentially “scamming” players out of standard refund policies. A player claimed that much of the early game consists of cutscenes, strategically pushing players past the refund mark.
For context, Steam’s refunds policy, arguably most flexible of all platforms, gives you back your money if you’ve played less than two hours of the game. PlayStation won’t refund if you’ve downloaded the game and Xbox warns against “significant playtime.”
If Mindseye chews that time up with non-interactive scenes, the $60 you spent on the game will feel wasted if you’re not enjoying it.
Regardless, some players were able to enjoy the positive aspects of the game, saying it’s “more inline with games like WatchDogs 1 or Mafia 3 type” instead of GTA 6.
It’s still very early to say how things will play out for Mindseye in the coming days. With a critical patch still underway, it remains to be seen how many of these glaring issues will actually be fixed.
