Microsoft Recommends Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch as the Successor to Nuance PowerMic

Speech Processing Solutions, the professional dictation solutions company under the Philips brand, announced that the Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch has been officially recognized by Microsoft as the recommended successor to the soon-to-be-retired Nuance PowerMic series. The Philips microphone is now the recommended hardware to use with the Nuance Dragon range of professional speech recognition solutions.

Following the completion of its acquisition of Nuance Communications in 2022, Microsoft now sells and supports the complete range of Dragon speech recognition solutions. These are still some of the leading Windows-based dictation solutions used for mission‑critical documentation in healthcare, financial services, retail, and telecommunications industries.

Although this market is now being strongly disrupted by new companies working with AI speech-to-text multilingual models, most of which are already able to run on-device, Microsoft (the company that acquired and closed Skype) continues committed to building upon the technology it acquired from Nuance, given its professional applications and synergies in the integration with Microsoft’s cloud services.

Prior to Microsoft, the Dragon speech recognition software has undergone several major ownership changes since its foundations in 1982 with the original DragonDictate software. Dragon NaturallySpeaking was first released in 1997, and the company was acquired in 2000 by Lernout & Hauspie (L&H), a Belgian speech recognition company. Shortly after the acquisition, L&H declared bankruptcy, and the business was grabbed by ScanSoft. In 2005, ScanSoft merged with and rebranded as Nuance Communications, adopting the Nuance name. Nuance developed Dragon into specialized products for various industries, including medical, legal, and professional markets.

As the only microphone recommended by Microsoft for PowerMic replacement, the Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch delivers plug-and-play compatibility with existing Microsoft Nuance speech recognition solutions, including Dragon Medical One, Dragon Professional Anywhere, Dragon Legal Anywhere, and some versions of PowerScribe, offering medical, legal, and business professionals an alternative for uninterrupted documentation workflows.

With an intuitive button layout mirroring the PowerMic, the Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch offers users a familiar, yet enhanced dictation experience to enable effortless transitions. Already in use by millions of medical, legal, and business professionals worldwide, the Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch also features pre-configured Dragon function keys, a studio-quality microphone with noise reduction, an ergonomic design, and hygienic housing, ideal for long-shift use and clinical work environments. Advanced touch sensor navigation replaces the need to switch to a mouse when connected to a Windows PC.

Yes, somewhere in New York, a successful lawyer and business owner is still dictating documents to a wired microphone connected to a Windows PC (with no Bluetooth)…

“With the PowerMic now being retired in the coming weeks, organizations must move quickly to maintain continuity in documentation,” says Thomas Brauner, CEO at Speech Processing Solutions. “The Philips SpeechMike Premium Touch is delivering both familiarity and unprecedented quality in speech recognition accuracy. I am delighted to be able to offer the Philips SpeechMike – the leading and most widely used dictation microphone in the world – to all existing PowerMic users.”

Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, Speech Processing Solutions (SPS) is an AI-powered dictation and transcription solutions company, active in over 50 countries, with more than 4 million users and a network of 1,000+ partners.
